This early morning commuting into London again has taken a bit of getting used to. I had grown rather attached to getting up when I wanted to (which wasn't at 7am!). Today none of the car park ticket machines were working. Not unusual.
I was standing on the platform listening to my iPod (Gordon B would be proud of me) when a man approached me and asked how my new TV project was going. It turned out that he is a reader of this blog and also lives in my village.
I was quite taken aback to be honest. I'm not used to talking that early in the morning! Anyway, I thought that this deserved the invention of another term to add to the growing blogging dictionary. Blogspotting - identifying bloggers in public, especially on train platforms. And I assure you that my blogspotter was neither carrying a clipboard or wearing an anorak!
My understanding from a number of e-mails is that the TV project is very ambitious and if maybe initially a sleeper [after the first flurry] it will gradually fill a niche and become required viewing [Samizdata notwithstanding].
You sure your "blogspotter" wasn't working for MI5?
The time is fast approaching when you will need a big floppy hat and outsize shades just to go to Waitrose....
Obvious really. You're a marked man...
Given the BNP sympathising contributors that infest you delightful forum from time to time , and detest me , I very much hope I will never be recognised.Hence silly name
`I feel threatened``
boo hoo weep weep boo hoo .
You know who you are
Surely blogger spotting?
Your'e Bloggered now...!
given I'm an egg wearing a pith helmut you'd think people would spot me more often
Have you decided yet which celeb programme you want to go on.... Get me out of Here, Love Island or that one where you have to milk pigs?
Didn't see you on the platform at 6am. I'll look harder next time.
I promise not to talk to you but just to whisper to everyone else and point at you Iain :)
I can assure you that I don't work for MI5! I'm sorry you were taken aback Iain. One of the problems with regular reading of weblogs is that, even more than with other media, one encounters all the accidents of familiary - I feel as if I know you, or Jonah Goldberg, or Tim Worstall, or Glenn Reynolds, really, really well. That feels like friendship while at the same time, of course, you don't know me from Adam. This is even worse than the situation with Television where one again has some of the accidents of familiarity without the substance. The only constraint is going to have to be our good manners.
I hope I didn't overstep the mark this morning!
Robert, not at all. It was a pleasure to meet you! Do say hello again!
Blogspotting? The Web 2.0 equivalent of trainspotting?
At the Conservative Future training day on Saturday, people would typically start conversation with me by referring to me as 'name withheld from Conservative Home'.
Rude awakening as I clearly spend far too much time blogging.
Fortunately they tended to share my opinion of the attention-seeking interloper from UKIP (his latest in a long line of parties in a very short period of time) and how he is ruining a fine blog.
Not everyone who has a robust attitude to immigration and a dislike of Islamofascism is a BNP sympathiser.
I for one insist on a level playing field for all, but I will not abide noisy minority groups who want to hijack the news agenda and indulge in the perversion of our English (yes, English) language, in order to make it impossible to criticise them.
It is people like you who are intent upon one thing, which is to close down debate.
Please go away, or words to that effect.
indeed iain, celebrity is changing thanks to memes.
interesting to see how blogs work, we have those like guido who tend to shun publicity and then we have people like yourself who make the blog a much more personal experience.
with all these readers you shouldnt be taken aback, the moment you put your mug on the banner header it was inevitable people would spot you in the street.
i have a feeling youll be recognised much more in the future - dalemania at the tory party conference perhaps?
Perhaps the people who produce the Top Trumps cards could produce one for bloggers with categories such as average number of hits per month, number of links to other blogs, average number of comments per post etc
Dear Deep Stoat
I also have a robust attitude to immigration ( or net migration more properly ) and a dislike of Islamic fascism or any fascism . For example anti black the racist genocide committed by Islamic Arabs in Dafur goes unreported compared to Lebanon which makes me sick . If you knew me you would know the wars I have with my own association for their pusillanimous political correctness on this subject which is highly pertinent to our local scene.
Nonetheless you are wrong Conservatives close the subject down mostly by being ignorant racists as contributors here constantly demonstrate. That arrogant vain glorious fool Enoch Powell was the first of many more in love with his performing ego than political reality and the low grade hate mongering of the Rivers of Blood Speech is exactly the problem .( .. and his poetry is excremental ! )
I will not go away in any language and if you are not a BNP supporter or sympathiser then I take you to be on my side in all, essentials
By the way leafing though the arts reviews today I saw there was an all male production of Taming or the Shrew (amusing in itself). It popped into my head that there is a female (?) contributor here who would make a good Kate. It also popped into my head that most of you who blither on about defending English culture usually know little about it or its language. I know all.
I am not intent on one thing I am a fascinating renaissance polymath. I await your admiring panegyric in sonnet form .
New mania is the sun and Sky
He really is a super guy
I love him more than I can say
I `m sorry I told him to go away
Do not trifle with me little stoat
Greenham woman: You obviously haven't been paying attention - we all know that Iain shops at Sainsburys in T Wells not Waitrose. As for disguise, I would recommend Flak jacket and Kevlar helmet....
