Teach Yourself Conservative

Here's a little film I made for today's Daily Politics with the irrepressible Giles Dilnot, who's taking a language course for Europeans called Teach Yourself Conservative.

English - No No No.

French - Non Non Non.

Etonian - What an absolutely super idea! Are you going to Monte Carlo for the weekend? My mother wants to stay there, and needs advice as to which is the nicest hotel? Not too many gigolos preferably.

The Tory party shifted from being grand and embracing Europeans when I was a kid to the bunch of small-minded xenophobic little-Englanders we now have. Any party which put that frankly racist bigot William Hague into the Foreign Office is hardly a European one.

And Labour has been very little different even though the language has been a bit more moderate.

Is the old CCO office in Smith Square really going to be known as Europe House after its refurb.? Talk about rubbing salt into a wound.

Tories don't mind embracing Europeans, Simon, especially the good-looking ones.

A 'Little Englander' is someone who was against fighting the Boer War.

A xenophobe fears foreigners.

A racist hates people from other races. You've got a lot of sorting out to do here.
