Clegg Shows Tories a Bit of Ankle

If THIS FT report is to be believed, the boy Clegg is going to do something rather courageous today. He's going to set out the terms for cooperating with a minority government. From the subjects he is going to discuss it is not difficult to read the tealeaves and that the only minority government he could support would be a Tory one. The FT says: "Mr Clegg’s legislative shopping list is remarkably similar to the priorities identified by Mr Cameron’s team for his first Queen’s Speech. They include a focus on civil liberties, education reforms, the environment and more local decision-making."

Interesting stuff. I sense another round of love bombing is about to begin.

No Iain I do not believe that . It was reported in the Independent a week or so ago that he was already in negotiations for PR with Brown and the truth is that his Party will not support the Conservatives.

Vote Clegg ,get Brown was already in the air and this must be a smoke screen. I do not trust them and no-one should ever trust them.

Of cousre the more Conservative votes he gest the better placed ghe is to do a deal for PR with Brown.

Are these not the same genuinely liberal policies that you and half the Tory Party repudiate? What exactly do you make of environmentalism, electoral reform, and actual genuine localism then? Eh?

Sorry to be repetitive about this....but as I've said before, his party won't let him do it unless electoral reform is on the table, and Cameron has made clear it won't be.

Maybe it will be as cogent as the Welsh Liberal Democrats, where half wanted to form a coalition and the other half couldn't agree on their terms, and the whole thing went pear shaped. Then they watched their political enemies form a Government as they stood on the sidelines.

Still, love means never having to say you're sorry...

Mmmm. The new Gang Of Four might be worrying him, don't you think?

If they go separate from Labour and try to launch another Labour breakaway like the original Gang (British original I mean), Clegg will be mincemeat.

Maybe he's reaching out for an early security blanket.

No love-bombs will be needed once the Gang of Four are on the loose. British politics will be entering a new era - one which won't need Clegg.

Don't believe a WORD of it. previous Libbie leaders have cosied up to Lying Labour overtly- and covertly. All this 'constructive co-operation' talk is bollards. Just look at the Scottish LibDems after they had their backsides kicked by the SNP in the recent Scottish elections- talk about churlish!

Seems like its a "Vote Tory, get a dose of Lib Dem!" or "Vote Lib Dem, get Tory!" sceneario coming up

I thought that there could be nothing that would stop me voting LibDem at the next General Eelction. Not because I necessarily support them on everything but becuse my MP is the excellent Vince Cable. However if Clegg so much as hints that they would enter a coalition with the Conservatives they can kiss my vote goodbye...

"the only minority government he could support would be a Tory one" - good, that should bring the 'protest' voters back to Labour in the key marginals.

Vote Liberal and get Tory is a more powerful slogan even than vote Liberal and get who knows what.

No wonder Clegg's arrival has rattled posh Dave...

go on Nick, defect! ;)

seriously tho, how many lefties would leave the party then? i suspect quite a lot. how many conservatives voters will they tempt away with this? erm, none.

i can see labour campaigning on 'vote lib dem, get the tories', i can also see people thinking that if they'd get a tory led government if they voted lib dem, then they might as well vote tory anyway.

are you feeling the sqeeze yet Nick? so come on Nick, stop messing around, defect, and bring as many right-leaning Lib dems with you as possible, while they're still MPs!

See Fraser Nelson who agrees with me this is just a ploy to leech Tory votes.

I'm sick of this "Vote X, get Y" rubbish. It's dishonest and just plain low. Though "Vote Cameron, get ConHome" would help scare people off Snooty Dave and his pals. I'd show floating voters some of the threads on there.

Lib Dems seem to have their tails up, in yesterday's council by elections they took three Tory seats with over 50% of the Vote.

West Devon BC -56%, Portsmouth UA -55%, and Throwbridge TC-52%.
