From 18 Doughty Street to Newsnight

On Vox Politix on 18DoughtyStreet tonight at 9pm I'll be joined by Andrew Mackinlay MP and John Redwood. At 10pm we're hosting a discussion on what David Cameron should do in his second year of office with Tim Montgomerie, Jo-Anne Nadler, Shane Greer and Michael Ediae. Donal Blaney will be in the chair for that one.

I'll be trotting off to the Newsnight studio to take part in a live discussion with Kirsty Wark on Blair's nightmare day alongside Anthony Howard and Tony Wright MP.

Second year?
Would that be as a conservative?
Or as a pinky green neolib?

Offering hostages to fortune, aren't you?
Hubris could well bite you in the bum.
And I've a few personal wagers laid that he never gets a first year, let alone a second.

Iain, please make the point that these events DO NOT only interest those in the Westminster village.

I'm sick of that arguement!

Go on. I dare you. Ask Redwood the words to the Welsh national anthem.

Newsnight will be a not to be missed event.

Excellent performance Iain, kept that unpleasant Wark woman at bay well. But wasn't Anthony Howard on good form, you must let us know what he had been drinking beforehand. One of the most entertaining Newsnight discussions for a while.

So that's where you sneaked off to. Don't worry if you were wondering what was going on at Doughty St in your absence - I live-blogged it.

Good effort Iain on Newsnight - your efforts to improve are paying off.

Could Roman Abramovitch sponsor all the political parties ? They could all wear Chelsea strip in the House of Commons

Anyone remember that 70s TV show that began 'Well I'm not the kind to kiss and tell...'

What's the betting that Tony and Cherie are looking for their very own 'Fall Guy' as we speak ?

Iain - long may you keep you independent point of view. I'm not sure how well it will serve you in your political career, but it does great service for the rest of us as well as credit to yourself. (I especially enjoyed the shoke from Kirsty Walk when you explained that it was your view - whatever the party line was.)

Good performance - like on 18 D your getting much better. The old geazer on your left (in both senses of the word) is clearly on his way out.

Add my comments to the others, very good performance on Newsnight. It was great to hear someone say something they really believed (re state funding) than follow a party line.

Forget Anthony Howard, I was half expecting a 'Frankie Howerd' moment - when he said about Pearl Harbour, I was half expecting you to chip in:-

'Infamy, Infamy, they've all got it Infamy...'

That was entertaining. Howard in usual form, always a nice turn of phrase. You did very nicely but, as has been mentioned, ties can be a liability. Something a little less lairy would help and (carping, I know) but you'd look so much more imposing in dark blue suit.

Even so, a very good appearance and sufficient independence of thought shown. Just please do not allow that intellectual freedom to be subsumed to the party machinery...

And forgive the patronising tone.

Why, I do believe you dye your hair! You are not abandoning blogging to become a game-show host are you?

Iain, please ignore the fashion tips from those of us not actually on the telly. Great show.
