Brown to Spotlight Immigration in Bid to Woo Back Middle England
A reader tips me off that according to a government minister he spoke to tonight, Gordon Brown sees immigration as the issue which will set him back on the straight and narrow. He will be making a big speech on it in the next couple of weeks. Apparently he's been on the phone to Michael Howard tonight asking to borrow his dog whistle.

Has Gordon been reading this blog:
I think we should be told!
Iain , the amount of immigration we can actually control is very small when you add the EU commitments to other treaties and so on. Brown has refused to do anything serious about the border .If he now beefs up his callow labelling measures now he will be copying the Conservative Party again.
The BNP flank which is a real worry for him has already been addressed with the fictitious claim that he can provide British jobs for British people .There has been an ongoing motif of subliminal racism in fact.The Ealing result was important here and I have some staggering figures about the advance of the BNP into Labour territory
Presumably he is reacting to the news that his government have been producing statistics that are a pack of lies for a decade. This includes the recent self evident false hood that immigration increases national wealth ...not per-capita it doesn’t and not if you count the cost of educating in 8 languages etc. He has already rejected the conservatives calls for an overall number which was clear.
What can he possibly do now that will not
A Strengthen the appearance that the Conservatives are making the political weather
B Alienate his already seething left wing ..for who such issues are a last fig leaf socialism having been ditched …( so they can call us the nasty party a la Pooh Bear brained Recess monkey)
C Yet again appear a vacillating puppet controlled by events
D Be open top the toxic charge he is motivating working-class racism to shore up his Old Labour vote …in fact this has been going on for a while
E Lose further in the small but strategically vital swingers in the marginals who tend to be anti nationalist. He surely cannot afford to do this .
My only guess is that he will try to tie in the Lisbon lie fest with cooperation across borders to control immigration.He may drag inthe hugely unpopular ID card white elephant as well.
I have been surprised that you have not speculated more on the significance of Lisbon .Brown wil have to sit there obviously lying . Forget the EU , it’s a mater of honesty and now he is wounded and cannot brush it off. The coming period will be decisive .
That must be it , he must be trying a pre-emptive misrepresentation of his treachery as patriotism and this is shown by cooperation over controlling immigration.
This sounds like another Brown miscalculation to me . I hope he goes for it
When in need of vision or policy initiatives, make use of someone else's.
Well they can send Shahid Malik to some Islamic shithole country for a start, on a fact-finding mission - he is the most expensive MP in Westminster, topping the list of expenses claims with a whopping £185,421. The Member for Dewsbury, home to terrorists, is the first Muslim to be appointed a minister, so he has done them proud.
Talking of fact finding, how about Malik's voting record...mmm... now let me see...
Odd, isn't it that though his Shitipedia entry claims he has been critical of the government over Iraq, no where does it mention his voting record, which is:
On the motion in favour of Investigations into the conduct of the Iraq war he voted against on the four occasions this came up. He also voted against the idea that Parliament should have a say in going to war.
He voted against strengthening Parliamentary Scrutiny.
And finally (this is not exhaustive)
He absented himself on all occasions. (Well at least we now know his baseline for barefaced cheek)
In other words, He publicly claims to criticise the War, but votes to suppress the truth, he does not believe in greater Parliamentary Scrutiny or the importance of freedom of information, particularly with respect to expenses. I wonder why?
(also on Weasel's blog)
everyone should read this
Whilst pretending to be independent, this site is pure Tory propaganda.
Count your silver.
I would add "and lock up your daughters!" ... but ... nah.
It won't work because Labour lack all credibility on immigration. No one will believe that Brown will do something about immigration because as second-in-command for the last ten years he did nothing to stop the hundreds of thousands coming here. His speech will be met with well-deserved cynicism.
He is wasting his time. Everyone knows that it is Labour who have quiet happily increased the number of immigrants. He must have seen more focus groups since the announcement this week that Britain willsee 77 million within a few decades.
The electoral registers are full of people who should not be voting (or voting in all elections). And guess who they vote for ?
What's the next tactic?, Brown giving a speech on the unacceptably high level of taxation imposed by the previous regime..
Often quoted, never given in full. But I think there is a real need for it today. Especially on this blog on immigration. (Strange that Oborne in the Mail today has a large piece on immigration! I have long suspected him of being a Brown clone!
Hope you print this in full.
Goodluck to the O's!

The Secret People.
Smile at us, pay us, pass us; but do not quite forget;
For we are the people of England that never have spoken yet.
There is many a fat farmer that drinks less cheerfully;
There is many a free French peasant who is richer and sadder than we.
There are no folk in the whole world so helpless or so wise.
There is hunger in our bellies, there is laughter in our eyes;
You laugh at us and love us, both mugs and eyes are wet:
Only you do not know us. For we have not spoken yet.
The fine French kings came over in a flutter of flags and dames.
We liked their smiles and battles, but we never could say their names.
The blood ran red to Bosworth and the high French lords went down;
There was naught but a naked people under a naked crown.
And the eyes of the King's Servants turned terribly every way,
And the gold of the King's Servants rose higher every day.
They burnt the homes of the shaven men, that had been quaint and kind,
Till there was no bed in a monk's house, nor food that man could find.
The inns of God where no man paid, that were the wall of the weak.
The King's Servants ate them all. And still we did not speak.
And the face of the King's Servants grew greater than the King:
He tricked them, and they trapped him, and stood round him in a ring.
The new grave lords closed round him, that had eaten the abbey's fruits,
And the men of the new religion, with their bibles in their boots,
We saw their shoulders moving, to menace or discuss,
And some were pure and some were vile; but none took heed of us.
We saw the King as they killed him, and his face was proud and pale;
And a few men talked of freedom, while England talked of ale.
A war that we understood not came over the world and woke
Americans, Frenchmen, Irish; but we knew not the things they spoke.
They talked about rights and nature and peace and the people's reign:
And the squires, our masters, bade us fight; and scorned us never again.
Weak if we be for ever, could none condemn us then;
Men called us serfs and drudges; men knew that we were men.
In foam and flame at Trafalgar, on Albuera plains,
We did and died like lions, to keep ourselves in chains,
We lay in living ruins; firing and fearing not
The strange fierce face of the Frenchmen who knew for what they fought,
And the man who seemed to be more than a man we strained against and broke;
And we broke our own rights with him. And still we never spoke.
Our patch of glory ended; we never heard guns again.
But the squire seemed struck in the saddle; he was foolish, as if in pain,
He leaned on a staggering lawyer, he clutched a cringing Jew,
He was stricken; it may be, after all, he was stricken at Waterloo.
Or perhaps the shades of the shaven men, whose spoil is in his house,
Come back in shining shapes at last to spoil his last carouse:
We only know the last sad squires rode slowly towards the sea,
And a new people takes the land: and still it is not we.
They have given us into the hand of new unhappy lords,
Lords without anger or honour, who dare not carry their swords.
They fight by shuffling papers; they have bright dead alien eyes;
They look at our labour and laughter as a tired man looks at flies.
And the load of their loveless pity is worse than the ancient wrongs,
Their doors are shut in the evening; and they know no songs.
We hear men speaking for us of new laws strong and sweet,
Yet is there no man speaketh as we speak in the street.
It may be we shall rise the last as Frenchmen rose the first,
Our wrath come after Russia's wrath and our wrath be the worst.
It may be we are meant to mark with our riot and our rest
God's scorn for all men governing. It may be beer is best.
But we are the people of England; and we have not spoken yet.
Smile at us, pay us, pass us. But do not quite forget.
GK Chesterton - 1874-1936
Let's hope he's more successful than his ineffectual conference promise to deport foreign criminals and ensure jobs for Britons both in contravention of the Human Rights Act and EU conventions.
I suspect he'll have as much success with this - as most immigrants are from the EU anyway. It's all "hot air" for the gullible
So Brown is going after all those votes leaked to the BNP by trying to outdo them in attacking immigration. How very principled of him!
However, does't he realise that such a cynical strategy is doomed to failure and will end up in more disillusioned Labour voters turning to Nick Griffin's bunch.
Most people by now realise that Brown is a liar and a fraud and promising to "deal with" immigration is just empty spin from him whereas the ideological hard men of the BNP probably mean what they say.
Trying to outdo them on immigration is playing with fire and will only end in tears.
One optimistically assumes that the Great Leader will, in this purported speech, apologise for the appalling errors of misjudgement and incompetence perpetrated by this Government since 1997 regarding uncontrolled immigration. He will also confess that the Conservative Party was correct all along, and therefore he will severely punish anyone who labels members of the Conservative Party as 'racist'.
On the other hand .....
Here's betting he says the same thing nulab always say about immigration: 'the public are rightly concerned about uncontrolled immigration, so the government is going to legalise even more of it'
Big Mistake ! He has clearly been listening to Paul 'The Devil Incarnate' Dacre, and is going to try the very dangerous stunt of riding the two horses called 'DailyMail' and 'Guardianista' !
Watch as those bucking broncos throw him to the ground, injuring him horribly ! Just as well we have a decent healthcare system in this country, unlike the United 'Sicko' States...
PLEASE can you remove that photograph of Melanie Phillips on the left of your blog? That woman makes me want to punch babies in the face!!!!!
She is the original vinegar t*ts!
The only way Labour will get back on the straight and narrow is if Gordon Brown resigns of his own free will in the interests of the party or he is forced to resign. He's had his chance and failed.
The problem is that immigration is almost entirely in the hands of Brussels. So long as we remain part of the EU anything politicians do will be merely cosmetic. For obvious reasons even the Tories, who want to be anti-EU without actually leaving it, cannot say this.
No wonder people are cynical about politicians.
Immigration is perhaps the biggest issue we face and New Liebour has cocked it up completely. It's also hugely complicated, but I think there are four strands to it:
- Canadian, Australian, South African and New Zealand immigrants who work here for a few years when they are young and then go home, or else settle here. I've never met anybody with the slightest problem with this, and indeed I think they should be allowed to settle here at will if they don't have criminal records;
- Eastern European immigration, exponentially increased since 2004. They come here to work, but compete down the wages of low-skilled natives. This sort of immigration should be radically restricted, irrespective of EU treaty obligations, except where specific skill shortages are identified;
- immigrants from the Carribbean and Indian subcontinent. Unless they fill specific skill shortages, this kind of immigration should be ended. Marriages should be controlled much more carefully than they are now; and
- asylum seekers. Many are fleeing from genuine persecution, but unfortunately we can no longer afford to offer a refuge to all the world's refugees. We need to withdraw from the relevant UN convention, and hugely speed up the processing of these cases.
Of course, the problem may be reduced significantly when New Liebour's economic chickens come home to roost.
I am a Labour voter (an angry and disillusioned one!) but I am more convinced than ever that the increasingly vile Brown will not lead Labour into the next election.
He never fights when his opponent is strong, preferring to slink away to operate behind the scenes, like the coward he is.
Come the next election he will be so far behind the Tories and so discredited, ridiculed, and despised that he will not be able to face the humiliation of overwhelming defeat and so will resign the leadership on some spurious health grounds. The Labour party will be left in turmoil and we will, no doubt, be annihilated in the election.
No wonder the Tories have their tails up.
Johnny Bluepiece said "Whilst pretending to be independent, this site is pure Tory propaganda."
This is just so surreal. What next? Brown starts talking about immigration when he can't do anything about it?...oh no, wait a minute...
Judith writes: "One ... assumes that the Great Leader will ... apologise for the appalling errors of misjudgement and incompetence perpetrated by this Government since 1997 regarding uncontrolled immigration."
Judith - There have been no errors of judgement. Uncontrolled immigration has been finely judged and has done what it was intended to do - destabilise a formerly stable society and shake their self-confidence. Suddenly, backward people are entitled to impose their backward lifestyle on Britain's advanced civilisation.
Sudden, their bonkers religion/cult if given equality with Christianity and Judaism. Etc. Etc. Everyone here can add examples.
The islamics were a godsend - so to speak - for the Marxists, whose one overriding purpose in life is to destabilise Britain and to further a clearly lunatic fantasy New World Order. Before, they used to have to just push their socialist agenda without a strong rod for beating the British. They had to work on persuading the British that their destructive philosphy was a good idea.
Then the islamics arrived and bingo! A real rod with which to beat the backs of the British.
This has all turned out exactly right for the Marxists and Trots of the Jack Straw et Cie persuasion.
We Sacked Blair for This - I agree with your well-thought-out analysis. Brown won't stay the course and will eventually resign on spurious health grounds.
Canvas, Melanie Phillips is a lucid writer and she has an elegant face. If you want photos of Commie Polly Toynbee and/or shrieking moonbat Yasmin Ali-Baba (never memorised her name), you can find them on the internet.
psj Very good, as is Strapworld's poem.
"Just as well we have a decent healthcare system in this country, unlike the United 'Sicko' States...'
Don't make me laugh, I'd far rather be hospitalised in the US than in the UK.
Is this Brown's vision - in the rear-mirror - and he was the driver.
Verity says -
"Canvas, Melanie Phillips is a lucid writer and she has an elegant face"
Personally, I think Melanie Phillips is off her trolley - and she always looks like she is sucking a lemon. I dislike her more than I dislike that moron Littlejohn!
Verity - I agree that Brown will probably have to leave office prematurely - due to serious mental instability...
As part of the NWO plot to destroy Britin and especialy to wipe out the English culture and people Brown is having a laugh. He created immigration as an issue. He embodies immigration. When the economic collapse comes within the next three to five years, when peak oil strikes home, when gold and oil prices are shooting through the roof, when civil disorder on a daily basis is the new norm then you can all look back and say to yourselves: when I sat on my bottom and did nothing as my country was invaded and destroyed the name Gordon Brown will come for some myserious reason to mind. But that won't be enough, because he couldn't have done all this unless unless you all let him. The hippie generation are dirt.
I think Melanie Phillips has more intelligence & far more concern for & understanding of the liberal values, honesty & the rule of law than Polly, Moonbat & all the rest of the Guardianistsas put together. That the main criticism of her is her looks, not automatically of primary importance in a writer, says much about her critics.
Melanie Phillips not only has an instinctive understanding of true liberal values, but she's a lucid, elegant and well-reasoned writer. Unlike Polly T and Alibaba Moonbat.
Phillip is also quick-witted on Question Time and The Moral Maze.
I feel certain that Canvas professes himself displeased with her looks registers not at all.
Verity says: "I feel certain that Canvas professes himself displeased with her looks registers not at all."
I'm a woman! LoL
I think Melaine Phillips is up her own bottom. And she is a lemon sucker.
Thank you for displaying your intellectual charms Canvas.
"Gordon Brown"? [reads papers, websites] surely that's "David Cameron" who seems to be talking about this subject. Is he also using the dog whistle?
Neil, you are very welcome.
I can tell by your serious sense of humour failure that you are probably a lemon sucker too.
