Good to know that Charles Clarke won't be short of a bob or two. He's just been hired by law fim Beachcroft. According to The Lawyer.com Clarke has been hired to "give advice on strategy, positioning and policy for Beachcroft and its clients". I wonder if "exit strategies" come under his remit. Clarke joins former Tory Cabinet Minister Lord Hunt of the Wirral on the payroll.

Senior partner Simon Hodson said the appointment would bring a “fresh, new perspective” to the firm. It is to be hoped that Beachcroft do not have any dealings with H MTreasury after Mr Clarke's little outburst at the weekend.

Clarke said he believed the role would help him appreciate the challenges facing the commercial world. Sadly, I cannot report how much he is being paid.

"Clarke said he believed the role would help him appreciate the challenges facing the commercial world."

He's rivalling Blair and Brown for lies with this. Like all Labour people who rise up in politics, once they get there they craves cash, wants the wad and dig. the dinero. Now Clarke can prostitute his role as a former Home Secretary.

If he wants to see what the commercial world is like, why doesn't he join a small business?

Any ship in a storm for a rat leaving sinking ship.

How many other jobs will Labour Cabinet Ministers be sticking their corrupt faces into over the next year?

Clarke wants 'face challenges in the commercial world'. Well he will learn sweet bugger all flying first class in a 'Beachcroft' - a legal firm awash with Govt and Quango cash. Charlie this is not the real world. Want a real job go work as asst Manager of a small firm of say shopfitters in the Midlands. Lawyers Accountants and Management Consultants have grown fat on Govt contracts because you and your fellow Lab Ministers know sweet fanny adams about the world outside Westminster. So easy to write Govt cheques. So easy to pay consultants to think and act for you. Having written a political suicide note perhaps you need the money. Who knows PM Johnson may welcome you back to cabinet.

Iain, you're not being quite fair to Lord Hunt. He was Senior Partner there.

Griswold,
I think he knows that, lets face it this is just corruption and the conservatives are no cleaner.
Clarke is just another hypocritical pig at the trough.
We should be shooting these fuckers not voting for and paying them.
Be interesting to see what Iain gets up to when he is finally elected, hopefully all his online postings that can at anytime in the future be brought back to life will keep him from temptation, although we wont begrudge him a few free football match tickets.

Is Clarke going to work as a solicitor? Or is this just another piece of naked corruption using taxpayer's money to keep things sweet between the political class and those who live by acting as their 'consultants' - taking decisions for them so they can avoid all responsibility.

Clarke has been hired to "give advice on strategy, positioning and policy for Beachcroft and its clients".

Good to see that Beachcrofts are fluent in NuLab speak. The above roughly translates as:'Clarke has been hired to lobby like fuck for introductions, government contracts and further exemptions under the law....

Nothing like college mastership for a cosy bolt hole;
Charles is a Kingsman of course so let's hope the Provost is secure in his lodge.

Allow me to help you guess how much he's being paid. I quote from a supplement in the Lawyer magazine on the 100 biggest UK law firms' performance last year, published earlier this month:

"Beachcroft:

Turnover: £98m
Profits per equity partner: £270,000
Earnings per partner: £214,000
Equity spread: £175,000-£450,000"

These figures are entirely consistent with those issued in the September 2006 issue of Legal Business magazine, and we can therefore take these as reliable.

I think it is fair to guess that Charles Clarke's remuneration will be comparable to an equity partner rather than a salaried partner, and I shall leave others to guess more precisely just what such a consultant should be paid.

advising on strategy, positioning and policy ? You mean, just like he's doing for the Labour Party. Worth every penny.

Typical really. What more can be said?

Is he joining this firm to learn something or to offer advice? Either way he should be doing this pro bono.

After all, if he gets enough experience of the real world outside politics he might even become employable.

I do hope Beachcroft are not hoping for any government work when Brown is PM....

Oh you rude people! He has a (very!)large gut to support and obviously can only afford half the razor blades that most ordinary folk do. Those ear-pinning operations too are very expensive to save up for.

Yes - it does sound a bit unfair towards David Hunt. He was not only Senior Partner for 9 years, he was also a partner by the age of 26!!! only to be interrupted in 1979 when he was called to office by the iron lady (says 'Who's Who')

I hope he learns to shave properly before he gets a proper job.
