Lembit's Next Tory Opponent?

Glyn Davies is perhaps the most popular Tory politician in Wales. He has announced on his excellent blog that he is putting his hat in the ring to fight Lembit Opik at the next election. Lembit has a 6,500 majority so it would take a phenomenal swing to dislodge him, but if anyone can, Glyn can.

O/T but Ben Brogan just announced that Hilary Armstrong quits the Cabinet when Blair goes.

People forget that Lembit is very much liked in his constituency. Would be a big task to defeat him.

Glyn Davies has already tried to beat Lembit here once before in the 1997 GE and was hammered . Think the result will be the same this time .

Don't forget that the Tories beat the Liberals in Montgomeryshire in 1979 - the Liberals 99th year in Montgomeryshire. There's no reason Glyn can't do it, particularly if Lembit keeps playing the international playboy lifestyle - sorry, keeps acting as an MP!

The fact that Lembit used his position to arrange a prolonged cheeky holiday and has established a reputation for phallocentric priorities , will do him nothing but good in Wales. Despite the fact most Welshmen are publicly employed sensitivity councillors or computer programmers they still imagine they are the steel jawed sturdy thewed men of the Coal valleys.
Sadly Lembit is just about right for the new girly-boyos

Any comments on the BAE story Iain?

If you look at the breakdown of the regional list vote (the one for the larger area that comes after the constituency vote) in the Assembly election the Conservatives in the Montgomeryshire subdivision of the Mid and West Wales Region beat the Liberal Democrats. Montgomeryshire is solidly in play if Glyn is standing and Lib Dem support is clearly rather squidgy.

If I were Lembit, I'd get as many city directorships as he can while he still has the letters "MP" after his name.

Um, suspect their might be a few Lib Dems who wouldn't be totally mortified to see the back of Lembit.

As one Tony Blair (remember him anyone?) sort of said about one David Cameron (remember him anyone?) - if you can't knock Lembit 'hide, there's a meteorite coming' Opik off his perch, you don't deserve to be in politics!

Glyn has a huge majority to turn around from the last election and stands a good chance given the number of Conservative votes in the recent Assembly election. I suppose it would be wishful thinking for Glyn to hope that the Cheeky Girls will be named as Lembit's campaign manager!!!

Good luck to Glyn - Wales can't afford to lose talent and his approach to politic debate!

I thought he seemed rather pompous on HIGNFY.

Has Iain given up blogging then ? He used to be ever so good at it. He had a popular blog you know eponomously called "Iian Dale`s Diary"
( When he was blogging that was)

Those were the days.....

OT - Just listening to our Foreign Secretary in the Commons. What a squalid performance.

Wow, Montgomeryshire witness, that is really trawling the depths to have to go back to 1979 to prove a point about Tory strength in Montgomeryshire !

And as for New Welsh Right, can i refer you to the Euro election results in Norh norfolk in 2006 when the Lib Dems came second in North Norfolk yet got a 10606 majority in the generak election in 2005.

Did you have to ? :)

Mark Senior clearly knows Montgomery better than the chair of the the local Lib dem association who said that lembit was in trouble with the electorate. In the recent lib dem turmoil Lembit spoke in favour of deal with Plaid and Tories...he knows which way the wind is blowing...

Well, he would know which way the wind was blowing wouldn't he? He had a relationship with a weather girl.

I think Lembit used to be popular in Montgomery, his cheeky exploits have lost him a lot of support. At the same time Glyn's profile has gone up and up with his high profile in the Assembly. I'm a Plaid supporter by the way.

Dear newmania - Montgomeryshire has about as much to do with the coal mining valleys as St Mary Mead has with Sun Hill.

Simon Baynes fought the seat last time, he is an excellant local candidate. If anyone can beat Opik he can, he is well liked by his association - I hope he puts his name forward as well.

It certainly seems that Oprick has pissed off a lot of the electorate in Montgomeryshire with his childish publicity seeking antics,a big show off whose not even funny.
There is a high probabilty for him to have his Portillo moment at the next GE.

Glyn's way forward has been cleared further by the confirmation from Dan Munford (the previous Tory candidate for Montgomeryshire at Assembly and Parliamentary level) will not contest Glyn for the Tory nomination.

Perhaps with the Welsh Lady Weather Girl, ditched by Lembit, might help the cause!!!!

Bring in Currie to counter the Cheeky girls!!!
