BREAKING NEWS: Prescott Has Got Pneumonia

From PA
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is suffering from pneumonia, his office
confirmed today. Mr Prescott has been moved to a high-dependency unit, but a
spokesman stressed that this was not because his condition had deteriorated, but
in order to allow him to be monitored more closely. The 69-year-old has spent
three nights in hospital since falling ill on Saturday. In a statement, Mr Prescott's spokesman said: "The Deputy Prime Minister's Office has tonight confirmed that the Deputy Prime Minister is suffering from pneumonia. "He has been moved to a high-dependency unit, not because of a deterioration in his condition but so that his condition can be monitored more closely."

I may have had my differences with the Deputy Prime Minister but I wish him well and hope he's back on his feet soon. I am hoping anyone who comments on this post will take the same line.

Two Jags would surely go for Double Pneumonia.

Guido's coverage (well, the comments to his post) sum up the bad (and nasty) side of blogging in my opinion.

I presume this hospital stay is on the NHS?

I detest the Labour Party and I detest almost everything that - wait, no, I can't think of any exceptions, I detest everything that the bitter old socialist has interfered with and fouled up during his time in office. However, I refuse to take any pleasure in the man's illness; I wish him a speedy recovery.

I've been in High Dependency units twice. You are certainly monitored more closely, because you need to be. They are only used for people that are quite ill. John Prescott has my best wishes, because a man of his age with pneumonia being in a HD unit makes this a very serious matter.

Pneumonia is a serious infection, there is no way he will be back before June 27th when he is supposed to resign. Thats his lot as DPM.

Hope he makes a quick recovery

Christian charity and all that ... but really is he bovvered about anyone but himself?

Rachel Joyce said...

I don't wish him harm so I hope he doesn't get MRSA or another superbug (so much more prevalent in ITU's and HDU's) and lives to have a retirement - but it doesn't do a politician any harm to see first hand the NHS "warts and all" rather than via pre-organised visits. But then I suppose he will get 2 jags treatment.

Colin D said...

Its nothing for a bruiser like 2 jags. Why I nearly got triple pneumonia once just outside Tobruc, or was it Kings Bloody Cross, Sydney.

Anonymous said...

In my experience, HDU is just a holding point until the ITU has a slot. Looks not very good for the old bugger.

Just shows that those Caribbean jollies aren't worth the risk.

(Mind you, the "Two Hearses" line on Guido made me smile. A bit.)

How come Blair and Brown haven't been to see Two jags in his sick bed?

Most Peeps go to visit their mates when they are in Hospital.

Don't suppose Patricia will make a visit until John's on the mend.

Are they all so shit scared about bad NHS publicity if it all goes tits up not to visit their Old Labour Chum and DPM on his two sick beds?

Why should we have the same reaction to Prescott's illness? You are being politically correct, no?

Shouldn't have gone on the freebie. Got what was coming. Of course he will get the best of treatment - unlike Jem.

Anonymous said...

Much as I dislike him, I wouldn't wish serious illness on him. HDU is pretty serious though.

Pneumonia occurs in one third of patients after a stroke.

A speedy recovery, Mr Prescott.

so whos running Britain ... blairs away, prescotts in hospital and browns not crowned so whos in charge ?

My experience of treatment for pneumonia in an NHS hospital during Prescott's term of office:

I was left sitting up on a trolley in A&E - couldn't breathe if I lay down and was in too much pain to move - for without 5 hours without even a sip of water or being examined. When an exhausted doctor finally diagnosed pneumonia there was a mad panic to drain my lungs and I was allowed a few hours sleeplessness in the madhouse of what seemed to be a geriatric ward before being turfed out to drive myself home.

A week earlier, I collapsed and had been taken to A&E by ambulance, where I'd also waited hours to be told there was nothing wrong and to make my own home like a malinger. The delay added to the scarring of my lungs. I have private health care, yet My GP, mislead by A&E's original misdiagnosis, would not refer me to a private specialist.

So forgive me if I'm not hugely sympathetic about Mr Prescott.

I'm sure that a Humphrey somewhere in Whitehall is telling a Bernard that what with Blair away, Prescott ill and Brown nowhere to be found as usual, the civil service will be able to get on with running the country...

nothing neats the comment on guido " will he now be called 'two plots'"

whilst it is sad for anyone to be ill he simply doesnt deserve much sympathy. had he chosen to live his life in a more honouravble way he would receive more concern. he hasnt given a fig for anyone but himself and lied and cheated.....wot goes around

In that case,Iain, I have nothing to say ....

Prescott, of course, being high up in the politburo, is able to be admitted to a high dependency unit straight away. Unlike my sister, who got pneumonia two years ago, and the doctor wouldn't even come out, she had to drag herself to the surgery. She recovered, but we had to dig deep into our pockets for the treatment and if she'd been left to the mercies of the NHS, I doubt she'd be alive now.

Why all the sympathy?
This is a thoroughly unpleasent individual who would probably laugh his tiny chipolata off if somebody whom he perceived to be "one of that lot " fell ill.
Save your sympathy for the families of the young men and women who keep coming home from Iraq/Afghanistan in coffins thanks to this mans moral cowardice.

"The Old Man's Friend", isn't that what they call pneumonia?

I can't help feeling this is suspicious.

In what way, Verity? You mean that you suspect that the story is untrue and has been put about in order to detract from something else?

Tom Tyler - In what way suspicious?

It is just before he retires. In fact, he may not be out of hospital by that date. So no time to tidy up "loose ends".

Blair - please God! - retires on the same day and thus loses his powers of patronage and doing informal favours.

That means that people who have lived under his strange, inexplicable patronage for 10 years will now no longer get rewarded for keeping their own counsel.

Such people may feel a sudden urge to write a book or, in some cases, have a book written for them based on notes they have taken out of their lock boxes.

That's all.

Iain

I’m a bit pissed having been out for a heavy session with a group of Scottish libertarians/Tories/Lib Dems and SNPers.

Trust me, we know how to do it up here, even without DK!

I loathe what the Labour government has done to our country. Scotland, the UK or whatever,

But I wish the old bastard well.

When he’s better, we can continue to (intellectually) beat the shit out of him.

I’m off to bed.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't want to wish Two Trolleys ill.
I just want to express my sincere hope that he'll be out of hospital very soon!

Oh quite Iain I never did get this hatred for Prescott , as a Politician his involvement in the regional nonsense and housing policy is detestable but as a chap I quite like him.
Gets drunk , shags the typist , fiddles expenses blags the travel budget , punches people and syphoms cash out to his son.

I like him already , he should have been a footnal manager though.

Poor old Prezza who has our sympathy. He must have become run down after his gruelling trip to the Caribbean he made on behalf of the taxpayers.

I heard on the news last night that he's in a pie dependency unit, is that right?

Whatever he is in public life, he also has a family, and although, at times, he has been a bastard to his family, I am sure they will forgive him at the moment.

Just don't let us be paying for a fancy funeral, and please let the tributes be muted, not fulsome.

Sorry to bring the bad news folks but according to the Hull Daily Mail John Prescott is sitting up in bed "laughing and joking" with hospital staff despite battling against pneumonia, his son has said.

David Prescott visited his father today.

The Hull East MP and Deputy Prime Minister is being treated at University College Hospital in central London.

Lots of deleted comments, methinks 2 jags is not to popular with readers.

Sorry but no sympathy for this amoral rat of a man.

Oh apologies to rats over the last line, even rats have some standards.

Do you think that he regrets killing the British shipping industries with his marxist mates? When he shows remorse for the tens of thousands of jobs he did so much to destroy then ill wish him well BUT NOT BEFORE.

Andrew Ian Dodge said...

I do hope Prescott comes out alright. He is such a great source of (bad) humour it would be a shame to lose him. Get well soon Prezza mate!

Scipio said...

I hope that he finds his stay in hospital enlightening, gets a real insight to how the NHS has been undermined by his government's policies, constant interference and changes of direction, that doctors and nurses use his incapacitation to share some of the frustration that they feel with him, and that he doesn't get any preferential treatment simply because he is a fat, unhealthy, pig-ignorant, feather nesting, serially incompetent and sexually aggressive MP with an overpaid non-job.

As for his health, one should never wish anyone ill, but I am not weeping in my tea for him. The man is the perfect illustration of everything that is wrong with British politics, and also represents everything that is wrong with the Labour party!

Finally, the longer he is out of circulation, the less damage he does to the country!

Finally finally, I don't think I would be saying this about anyone else - but he really does get my goat! I doubt for one minute if it was a Tory in his position he would give a flying you-know-what, and would doubtless be delighted!

What goes around comes around!
