Plaid Minister Under Pressure to Resign Over Smoking Gaffe

News comes from Wales that the gaffe prone Plaid Culture Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas is likely to lose his job this evening after claims that he smoked a cigar in a Cardiff pub. It was Thomas who recently presented a prize to a Welsh author at a literary awards ceremony only then to realise he had read out the wrong name.

Plaid's reputation relies in part on how they perform in the coalition. It was always dangerous for them to join with Labour and this sort of thing does them no favours. The Welsh media - no friends of Plaid - is in full cry tonight.

Agreed, Boyce.

To me, these are more praiseworthy than gaffs.

Pathetic, that's what it is, pathetic.

Hmm.. If lighting a cigar is now a career-terminating offence, then I think we all have cause to be a bit worried...

I mean, does this presage developments whereby a cabinet minister who is clocked, once, going two mph over the motorway speed limit by a camera, and causes no other 'moving traffic' offences, will have his portfolio taken away from him ?

Scope for mischief-making there, I think... I mean, someone smoking in the open air, but at a railway station which has a 'no smoking' rule to prevent arguments on the platform could be in real problems.

And it was the tories that were jumping on his political grave.

What is the difference between and Englishman and a rabbit? Rabbits are more macho.

"From the early days of the Assembly, Mr Thomas made a name for himself as a larger than life character who worked hard and played hard."

The real story is hidden between the lines in this piece from the on-line version of the Western Mail.

SO WHAT. It's not 'crime of the year' is it. PC reps are usually from North Wales. If anything, the AM should have resigned if he was caught doing what 90% of them do up there- in the dark, in a field, and with a fluffy animal that goes baaaaaaa.

Hilarious. Never heard that one before. It must have taken you seconds to come up with it. Twpsyn.

Giving up a ministerial job for smoking a cigar in a pub? Gosh, what happens when the government issues new dietary guidelines and a minister is caught eating a bacon cheeseburger and an ice cream cone?
I wonder if Cameron will ask members of the Shadow government to go teetotal lest there be any misunderstanding about the moral fitness of the new Conservative Party to run NuLab's nanny state.
