Matthew Parris may well be correct, but there might also be a once in a generation opportunity here to reach out to those disillusioned and disappointed with the apparent acrimony of party politics.

If opposition politicians do become involved, wouldn't they be at liberty to place on public record those decisions which they do and do not agree with? Or is it envisaged that there might be some kind of collective responsibility taken with no public dissent permitted?

Any public record could be relied upon during a GE campaign with the electorate drawing its own conclusions. By that time, the economy might have had the benefit of the best thinking across the political spectrum.
