Tony Blair or the Eurovision Song Contest?

If you haven't had enough of Tony Blair today, BBC Parliament is offering you "another chance" to see the three part Michael Cockerell series on Blair from 8-11pm on Saturday night. That presents me with a real dilemma. Blair or the Eurovision Song Contest... Hmmm.

"We''re flying the flag.... all over the world." Go Scooch!!!
UPDATE: DISPATCHES: GORDON BROWN: FIT FOR OFFICE?
14 May at 8.00pm on Channel 4

“I’ve been a political journalist for 15 years and have closely followed the career of Gordon Brown. I have written pieces that both criticize and praise the Chancellor but one thing is unarguable – he is a massive politician of exceptional gifts, the kind of figure that comes along once in a generation - and in a few weeks time he’ll be Prime Minister. And yet some very senior figures on his own side are certain he is unfit for office – one has called him a ‘control freak’, another ‘psychologically flawed’ and one serving cabinet minister has said he’d be a ‘f***ing disaster’,” says Peter Oborne.

I think I'll go to the pub.

There was a story yesterday about an academic who has conducted a survey 'proving' that Eurovision is decided largely by music and performance rather than politics and nationalism.

So Blairite levels of spin have reached the Eurovision Song Contest.

No-one will ever be able to match the spleandour of "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi.

Thought that might be your cup of tea, Iain, what with the liking for Meatloaf, and all...?

It’s a terrific song . . . as befits the greatest nation on earth.

I don't have a telly so I can avoid this fairly easily. But I was visiting my folks when the 'song for europe' was on the telly and found it impossible to believe terry wogan when he said that scooch had not won!

Scooch has to be a band designed purely with Eurovision in mind and I find it difficult to believe anything could be closer to the ideal candidate.

So love them or love them I was pleased when it turned out Tel had made a mistake. Cannot understand how they are such outsiders - or are people starting to take the contest seriously these days ??

ross f - this required an academic survey ???

What's up Iain? Can't work the video recorder. Surely you were going to record Eurovision for your collection anyway?

PS: Are you really a Meatloaf fan?

Indeed I am. Have seen him in concert three times. Have every album by him.

Just been watching BBC3 and the semifinals. Wow - another victory for New Europe and a thorough dunking for degenerate Old Europe and all that horribly deliberate camp. And always from our presenters the same bizarre outrage that those Balkan savages have snubbed the slick charms of Denmark and Austria. Hooray. Can't wait for Britain to be voted last in the final, not that I am not patriotic in other respects. There are certain rare cercumstances where national humiliation may count as the patriotic choice. Oh the whole thing is vile, why do they stage it?

You can't beat a bit of the mighty Loaf... in particular "Two out of three ain't bad"...

That's what the military call a target-rich environment.

Hawkins & Brown should have qualified!

Expect I'll be watching Channel 5. It's usually that or Channel 4.
Still have to pay for beeboid rubbish though.

Still reeling from the success of predicting last year's winners, Lordi, I offer my tips for the top of the contenders in this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Taking place in Helsinki, a wonderful city, I just wish I was there.

Nevermind. Here they are.

1. "visionary dream - performed by Sopho - Georgia's entry.

2. "Water" - performed byElitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankoulov - Bulgaria's entry

3. "work your magic" performed by Koldun - Belarus' entry

Here are the url's if you want to watch and listen:-

Oliver Letwin writes:

I am afraid "Scooch", the GB entry did not make it, it being a simulacrum, in the Baudrillardian sense and not a true Eurovision song at all. The performance itself, utilising double entendre and postmodern tropes to play on sexist perceptions of sexual identity it fails to crawl from the glophopper of stink. Total Carp.

Iain..did you clock the Meatloaf clone?

As this is Europe-wide, I hope there will be an announcement in the major languages that there is now a £1m reward offered for information leading to the safe return of little Madeleine McCann. One million pounds concentrates the mind.
