Finland Rocks!

Ok, I have lasted five songs. I wasn;t going to blog about Eurovision as I have to drive up to the BBC in about an hour, but Ireland's song really was crap. We have Scooch, they have Screech. Love Finland's song though! A female Meat Loaf. Excellent! Definitely the best so far... Leave me alone. OK, OK....

UPDATE: Right, tune into the BBC News 24 newspaper review at 11.45pm and let's see if I can mention Eurovision, West Ham v Man U and the YouGov poll. I'm told there is a very interesting political story in one of the papers...

I did tell you Finland the other night on Doughty Street. Still 50-1 if anyone wants a bet.

yes and you convinced me to lay a small wager on them coming in the top four and very nice odds mr woodman!

That's a couple of times you've mentioned the newspaper review this evening. Worried you might not get enough viewers to watch it Iain? C'mon, don't become a media wh*re.

Maximum respect if you can mention Eurovision, West Ham vs. Man Utd and the YouGov Poll in the same sentence!

Iain you'll have to watch the UK and Ukraine entries on You Tube. They sum up what Eurovision is all about!

Hope you will point out it is a disgrace that west ham have not been docked points after so blatantly cheating.

All fair minded football supporters want to see west ham relegated tomorrow.

Rubbish "tevez", how can you hold directors responsible for something which happened before they were in charge? WH deserve to survive.

I declare an interest as a Pompey fan, so uninvolved with title or relegation battles (this year!)

On topic, I thought that Terry Wogan was on form with his usual witty commentary tonight. What on earth were the Ukraine up to? And Romania? The bloke from Turkey needed a lethal injection as a show of mercy.

Moldova's entry are FIIIIIIIT!

I thought Bulgaria's entry was quite good, from what I caught.

Blairland nil points ,just turned the telly on ,last at everything ,we are loved in the EU ,just shows how rubbish we are.

Iain,

If you can work the phrase "bollocks to Blair" into your presentation, there may be a few bawbees in it for you.

My wife is convinced that the reason we don't get any points in Eurovision is that Tony Blair has ruined the image of the UK in Europe with his arrogance.

She might have a point but it'll be worse under Brown. They think he's a miserable sod who's always telling them to copy the way we do things in Britain. What - and go down the tubes?

Sir Tel was right - we need to build a wall to keep those Eastern Bloc countries out of Eurovision. Personally I think it should start at Calais! (Only joking!)

Reading the Comments on the BBC site about Blair ,the usual Labour we love him ,most hated him but the American comments suprised me they think the sun shines out of his ar--,they think he's the greatest prime minister we have ever had ,grass is greener etc.

Tonight has been fascinating. I agree utterly with you Iain that Finland's "rock ballad" was the standout song but it was never going to win, full stop. There was, as El Tel pointed out, a new eastern bloc that was always going to deliver a different verdict.

What is equally fascinating to me is the continued and utterly vociferous bloc "non-vote" against the UK. It's entirely political and it's entirely personal. These people truly hate us at the moment. Time for a diplomatic refresh?

Iain, well you managed all of those. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, for next time, is to mention red nickers :) Go on, have a try!

I confess I was one the the two people who watched you on BBC News 24 and was sorry to see that you were pipped by Julia Hobsbawn in mentioning Eurovision. But she didn't know the result! Then again she doesn't know the offside law. (Eric would be proud of her!)

Do you do this every Saturday night? Surely the Beeb (who you so despise for it's bias) don't pay enough to tempt you to drive for an hour or so for 10 or 12 minutes work late on a Saturday night? Bloody hell, that's my licence fee they are squandering on you! I think they should be privatised!

One thing though, they obviously have invested in better cameras than 18DS as you looked at least two stones lighter than when you're on the sofa during the week!

Have to say the UK entry was rubbish, and frankly vulgar. My Wife picked out the winner straight away - saying it was the best performance.

I rather liked the Bjork like entry from Georgia.

Still at least now we know that Malta is our major ally in Europe after they gave the UK 12 points.

I yearn for the days of the Warsaw Pact.

Eurovision - that annual pageant to show the UK why we should NEVER give in to majority voting in the EU....

Thought Greece was the best "pop" song, Georgia the "best-in-a-weird-kinda-way". Ireland's was the most awful performance, but the song was damned ropey too.

Don't blame the Europeans for our poor showing. I thought we got 19 points more than any sane person could award us. No, it was the voters in the UK who put them there in the first place. I see a pattern emerging here....

If the Serbs want everyone to toddle over to Belgrade next year they might want to hand over Karadic and Mladic to the War Crimes mob. I feel a threatened boycott coming on.

The BBC came up with an interesting political link to Eurovision Song Contest and the "contest" for the Labour Party which to paraphrase went something like this " The last time the UK won was 10 years ago just after Tony Blair entered Downing Street - the winning entry being sung by "Katrina and the Waves" will we be lucky this year and will that reflect our change of Prime Minister?" Incisive political analogy BBC ! A vacuos and empty but well presented pop song in 1997 and a performance by an extremely odd and plain looking woman backed by six more attractive colleagues winning it for Serbia in 2007!

UK second last, and where was Gordon Brown? As usual, miles away from Helsinki.

I can't watch Eurovision- i can't breathe properly due to laughing that much! Mind you, the Su Pollard lookalike should have won- sums up the entire EU project!

We presented the most mindless example of Euro-pop I have ever heard to please the Europeans and came second from last.

Says it all really.

We should produce what is popular here and hope for the best. We may not win but who cares anyway?

At least by doing this we showcase British music and talent. Which might actually make long term money, selling records to the British public and very possibly the whole world.

Abba was an aberation.

We should just find a talented British sounding music combo( which we have more then enough of ) and let them do their thing.

We could take pride in that at least. So we would be "winning" even if we came last.

One thing they all had to communicate in English to understand each other ,rest of Europe nil point ,England 12points.

Mr Dale, how on earth do you watch that facile, demented, moronic, boring crap without throwing up?

Apparently it was all a stitch up because all these former Yugoslav peoples all like each other so much they vote together.

How different from the time when we, out of our desire for peace, were hiring & arming ex-SS psycothaths to create peace there because, if our media is remotely to be believed, these former Yugoslav peoples hate each other so much that they can't even live in peace without our help.

Quite unfair of foreigners to vote in packs. They should vote for us like the English speaking countries (alone) did.
