Another Hurdle for Charles Clarke to Jump

It looks like David Davis will be claiming his third Home Office Ministerial scalp within the next 48 hours. Surely Charles Clarke cannot survive the LATEST news to emerge on the deportation scandal. As DD says: "This is as bad as it could be".

Don't bet on it, Iain. The capacity of this government to bulls--- itself out of any hole should never be underestimated.

Let us hope that the time at which this story broke was early enough for lots of people still to vote!

If he has refused to resign for the 288 foreign criminals he let out since last year, aint no way Clarkie is going to resign over something that happened in 1998 when he wasn't the Home Secretary.

Someone suggested earlier that Blair should tell Brown: "I'm putting you in the Home Office."
I'd like to know what the Chancellor would say. Probably,"no."
Seriously though, Brown is supposed to be the organisational genius. Should he not be the man to do mission impossible? Blair should tell him: "Gordon, you're in a comfort zone. Nine years in one job is no good for a rounded experience of government and no good for people like Reid or Darling who might like crack at it."
At a less-exalted level, any primary school head will move staff around from time to time to increase their knowledge of year groups and areas of responsibility. Promotion to senior management would be unlikely without the range of experience.
