Bang Up Blair Says Poll

A new poll in tomorrow's Sunday Telegraph shows that a majority of voters believe the Labour Government offered peerages in return for cash. 54% believed seats in the Lords were offered in return for donations or loans to Labour, or funding for the Government's City Academies. Only 28% did not. A similar proportion - 53% - said Tony Blair should face criminal charges if the Scotland Yard "cash for honours'' investigation finds that Labour broke the law as against 36% who said he should not be prosecuted. The poll also found public opinion divided over Mr Blair's plans for a new generation of nuclear power stations, with 40% in favour and 47% against. Courtesy of PA

Well, it's a good thiong we have the rule of law and not the rule of the mob then, isn't it? Do you think this poll proves anything?

Sky News are running a piece saying that Blair is now paying the price for sleaze and that his Govt is now regarded as being as sleazy as Major's. They're using the ICM poll in the Telegraph, backed up by comments from Sir Alistair Graham, head of the Public Standards Committee.

When they were in power, the Tories made very sure that the names of their donors were never revealed, by blocking every attempt to pass legalisation that would oblige parties to publish that information. I wonder how many Tory donors were rewarded wth peerages.

Trial by the mob is hardly a part of our criminal justice system.
