New Poll: If Gordon Brown Didn't Exist...

...we'd all be paying a lot less tax. Well that's stating the obvious I suppose. But just think about it, if the Dour One was ruled out of the Labour Party leadership in the post Blair era, who would they go for? There's not exactly a rich vein of talent to choose from, is there? Anyway, take part in the new poll in the left hand column. Just so you know, I voted for Hilary Benn.

The result of the last poll was that 72% thought Tessa Jowell should resign. More than 320 people took part.

You should have Douglas Alexander on that list, Iain. Incredible as it may seem, that's who the Brownite votes would go to if the Dour One were to fall under a bus tomorrow.

Looking at the list, I don't see a single name that I would want to be the next PM. I think that might be something to do with the Party they are all members of...

well, it isn't obvious. The only obvious thing is that you would have another chancellor.

Why's Hilary Benn so highly rated? Seems to be another Jack Straw to me.

There may not be any names jumping out at you - but with Blair and Brown having dominated the Labour party for the past ten years, you would hardly expect there to be.

Straw, Clarke and Reid may not impress now, but in a Blair/Brown vaccuum they could easily come into their own... and they have the ministerial experience to back it up.

As someone who voted slightly tongue in cheek for Hillary Benn, I was then amazed to see how well he is polling so far. However, whilst he may not have a high public profile, he is a very competent and effective politician; and may get support from some because of his name and heritage even though his political views are markedly different from his fathers.

We had a long very funny discussion about this on Conservativehome a few months ago when all the usual suspects were looked at including Hoon,Byers and Mandelson.
The only member of the Cabinet who looks a fully paid up member of the human race to me is Alan Johnson.

Miliband is the clear choice for those who like to take antiseptic with their politicians
