MAYDAY! A Date for Dr John Reid's Diary...

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis has calculated that it takes him an average of 11.9 months to dispose of his opposite number. So May 1st 2007 should be a particularly awful day for Dr Reid. MAYDAY! MAYDAY!

Hopefully, the whole lot of 'em will be out of office by then, following a new general election.

Well, I can hope...

The way the home office is at the moment I'd be surprised if there aren't enough cock-ups for Davis to have his head on a platter long before then. And Reid hasn't exactly started in the best fashion - I would imagine his approach thus far has put up the back of many a civil servant, and the last thing he needs is them working actively against him too...

Assuming of course that Gordon Brown doesn't resuffle him before that.

Good chance Dr Reid will be re-shuffled to another post well before then anyway - not known for staying in one post for long is he?

Much as I would like to give DD the credit, surely even you Iain must realise that he was just in the right place at the right time in both cases. Blunkett...well he was cocking up left, right and centre. Perhaps DD should even have claimed his scalp with Beverley Hughes with the right questions. And Clarke just messed up. I think the casualties are more a result of the mess of the Home Office. If the Tories win then serious changes will have to be made. Though not popular with "his" people, Reid is a formidable character. That said I thought Clarke was as well.

John Reid is pretty much safe from being sacked.
Given the state of the Home Office when he took over, it's hard to imagine how bad it would have to get before people started to blame him for the cock-ups and demand his resignation.
There must come a point when so many ministers have tried and failed in a department, that it's time for someone higher up to take responsibility.

Someone higher up Mike? Hope you don't mean the PM - remember being Tony Blair means never being responsible for anything.........

Sorry Ornette but that comment is pathetic.

I don't know how he does it, but DD always seems to get the scalps. Reid, I believe, is more reputation than effective. That's why he moves so often. I think DD will get him by Mayday.

I think you might find someone else decides to leave on May 1, 2007. It's the 10th anniversary of something, isn't it....?

Noticed how the Beeb has consistently called him Mister Reid lately?
