Ian Hislop Buys Ann Widdecombe for a Grand

A friend of mine was at a fundraising dinner last night at which Ian Hislop bid £1000 for tea at the House of Commons with Ann Widdecombe. Now there's a wall I'd like to be a fly on.

Talking of Widders, I shall be spending ten hours in a car with her on Wednesday as we take our little theatre show up to Grassington in North Yorkshire. I thought I'd record a podcast with her in the car (not for the whole ten hours!) so do let me have any questions you would like me to ask her.

The picture above was from An Evening with Ann Widdecombe, hosted by yours truly, at the Little Theatre n Sheringham.

How many MP's has she told about the Reinstate Roger campaign?

I have enormous respect for Ian Hislop. I read a piece - perhaps in the Speccie - around five or six years ago - about him being in a train carriage with violent yobs.

If I remember rightly, they started picking on one person. It bothered Hislop and he looked around to see if he could see any support in the eyes of his fellow males in the carriage, but they were all so preoccupied with what they were reading, they hadn't noticed the intimidation.

I can't remember the end of the story, except I do remember that Hislop did something himself. It may be (memory coming back?) that he pulled the Emergency cord and the train ground to a halt? Someone else may remember ...

Anyway, he's a short man and he was acting alone, but he had the bottle to do something while all the other lily-livered men [excellent at shouting aggressive football chants from the stands,no doubt] pretended not to notice. Hislop stood up for the law and the freedom of the individual to go about one's business in peace, and they failed.

I think he is a fine, fine man. Please ask Widders what she thought of him as a person.

TEN hours - Would that be in your Austin 7 Iain?

I suggest you try GNER from Kings Cross to York, which takes all of 2hrs 45mins and then a further 45 mins to Grassington = 3hrs 30 mins total, unless of course you find La Widdecombe's company irresistible.

10 hours? Where do you live, Pluto?

Why does she think Blair selected Rowan Williams to be Archbishop of Canterbury ?

What political opinion of hers has she changed in light of new evidence?

Why is she so wilfully blind about hunting with hounds?

Fox hunting, what about her attack on Bearskins. To critise the Army when they are serving and dying abroad is disgraceful!

Can you ask Ann if the story about her calling Porillo a Bastard when he disappeared on the 2001 election night is true. I hope it was.
