Why the Tories Should Listen to 'Sham 69'

Watlington, a commentator whose identity has never been revealed, writes today on the Social Affairs Unit blog that the only internal opposition in the Conservative Party to David Cameron does not come from Tombstone Cornerstone but is being fuelled by so-called 'Davis-ites'. He cites Graham Brady and Derek Conway as examples.

Now, normally I am rather a fan of Watlington's insights, but try as I might, I cannot see the point of his short article. It is true that Graham Brady has spoken out on grammar schools, but that was because it was a matter of conscience. It was not done to promote David Davis. For the life of me I'm not sure what Derek Conway's crime is supposed to be, but there we go. Derek has even started to go 'tie-less' so committed is he to Project Cameron!

Watlington even points out that David Davis has been studiously loyal. Well at least he got something right. Articles like Watlington's are pointless and dangerous. I thought about just ignoring it, but as it's been highlighted on ConservativeHome I think it needs refuting.

The fact of the matter is that there is NO serious opposition to David Cameron. The Tory Party is united in a way it probably hasn't been for more than twenty years - and a good thing too.

How do the lyrics to the old Sham 69 song go?

Freedom is given
Speak how you feel
I have no freedom
How do you feel
They can lie to my face
But not to my heart
If we all stand together
It will just be the start
If the kids Tories are united then we'll never be divided
If the kids Tories are united then we'll never be divided

You won't be surprised, knowing my musical tastes, that I bought a 45 single of that when it came out. It got to number 9 in 1978. Just thought you'd like to know that.

Jimmy Pursey helped lots of us get through those dark days of the late 70s.

I'm impressed with your left leaning musical tastes, Iain! Well done.

But do they TRUST Dave?
At the moment it's more a case of Brown getting it wrong than anything else.

So you weren't in the group. The Tories must NOT divide on any lines whatsoever in particular Europe which did for them last time.I was a Davies fan and after a very wobbly Summer I thought my worst fears had been realised but they are back on track with some very talented front benchers and a promising leader.Low tax and spend, the scrapping of the TV licence and excise duty on cars (tax disc) these are vote winners.LEAs allowed to have Grammar Schools if they wish. The public aren't stupid they know that pouring money into public service produces bugger all. They know millions of families are better off as scroungers. Get tough and look after white van man.

Have not seen anything but loyalty from Davis or Conway, but as for Graham Brady!
I could accept the matter of conscience argument if he had made his point and left it at that, he did not, instead he went on a very deliberate media blitz which deliberately undermined his own colleagues and party.
It caused immense damage as the polls showed at the time, which we all could have collectively paid the price for had Brown gone early.
Brady is a loose cannon without the political acumen to realise that he is damaging his party rather than the leader.

Either your memory is short or you never saw them. One thing is certain Sham 69 did not attract a core of left wing support.

Iain - I'd steer well clear of references to Sham 69 if I was you.

Yes I know your taste in music. Meatloaf's career is almost over and it's probably your fault.

(every cloud has a silver lining)

Oi!

My MP not wearing a tie! If you had told me last week we could have burnt him on a bonfire in Bexley Village.

Maybe Questions and Answers should become the Cameroony anthem.

Ah Sham 69, the memories -
"I'm a rebel stuck with a label
Trying to be someone in life
We're the people you don't wanna know
We come from places you don't wanna go"

Jimmy Pursey was always shocked that the NF would turn up at Sham 69 gigs. That wasn't what he was about - not at all. He could never understand it.

His largely skinhead following were left, right and non-political.

Pursey was however left leaning.

Here is a clip of Pursey performing with the Clash at an anti-rascist/anti-national front rally in Victoria Park, London.

What he calls the Davies-ites includes a number of people who voted for Davies who still think things would be better under Davies than Cameron.

They may be right or they may be wrong, but frankly that is not important. The important thing is to support Cameron all the time.

LoL, the Tories are looking quite united, well, up until Cameron reneges on his post-ratification EU treaty pledge, then it will be open warfare.

A real 'Sunday Morning Nightmare' to borrow another Sham song!

Isn't there some philosophical adage that 'the name' and 'the thing' are not the same.

I am passionately loyal to the traditional beliefs and values of the Tory Party (the thing) and utterly contemptuous of the the spivs, PR, and rebranding merchants, running it. They are Tories in name only.

No true Tory Party would exhibit the opportunism practiced these past couple of years.

"I'm Green Dave" (name).
'Chauffeur following behind with sandwiches and spare pair of socks'(thing).

I have the 12" version and have just found my box of LPs and singles collected in my "yoof".

Tranvision Vamp, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, an original "Pretty Vacant".

Now all I need to do is find the record player!
