Reid Steps Up His War on Peter Hain

Reports this afternoon suggest that Home Secretary John Reid has written to the Prime Minister condemning Peter Hain for proposing the use of stop-and-question powers for the police, only to then publicly condemn them as a 'recruiting sergeant for extremism', in order to further his own deputy leadership ambitions.

David Davis has commented on this extraordinary situation this afternoon...
First we see the incoming Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, briefing details of terror proposals ahead of an official announcement by the Home Secretary in order to gain good press coverage. Now we see Peter Hain being accused by the Home Secretary of using terror to further his deputy leadership ambitions. When will Labour Ministers realise that the protection of the public ought to be above politics and certainly above individual political gain? There is, of course, always room for legitimate differences of opinion in these matters but the public will be disgusted by what appears to be a deliberate use of terror in manoeuvres surrounding the deputy leadership of the Labour party.

This comes hot on the heels of Reid's comments yesterday in the Commons HERE. Is Reid trying to get Hain fired?

Ha! I never thought I'd ever agree with Reid, but Hain is such a w*nker that he deserves a good kicking.

Well quite and I think this developing story puts into context the Kite standard Jounalists who were complaining about you spotting their " Brown Nosing"
I particularly thought Hennesy`s saying " Are you calling me a liar ", was odious.

Goodness, Brown hasn't even been got through the door yet, and the internal opposition is up and at him (well, them, actually).

So, DD is still smarting that nobody gave a monkey's about what he had to say last Saturday.

Didn't NuLab abolish the Police's stop and search prerogative following complaints from the most law abiding of our enriching communities, followed by progressive exclusions for drugs etc?

When I think of the NULAB gang I always get a picture of RATS IN A SACK. Maybe its just me being cynical?
As the RMS NULAB starts sinking I think we will see a lot more of this kind of thing! Ha Ha Ha Etc.

Ha! ha! It's a case of who you hate the most aint it English geezers? Hain deserves to be hated the most because he's the most smug of the two. However, Reid is just as anti English as Hain. They both do the same bigoted crap to us English, just in different ways. It's exactly the same thing though. I really can't make up my mind who is the biggest jessie poseur out of the two. Remember when Reid threw a fit about being called an attack dog? Ha! ha! Oh mummy you're picking on my accent. Oh for crying out loud, how pathetic is he? They're both as pathetic as each other! How is that?

Oh by the way, you new labour anti English scum reading this aint it great watching those two dirtbags attack each other? We are enjoying watching the scumbag party fall apart. We are enjoying watching the infighting! AHA! HA! HA! HA! HA! Up the lot of yer!

Calm down dear, it's only a blogpost...

Anonymous: My perspective was that David Davis was quite rightly providing an Opposition analysis of the government's childish antics. It was because so many people DID give 'a monkeys' about what DD had to say that Mr Dale's report caused such a stir. Please, in future, do not attempt to speak for 'so many people'. Those people speak for themselves in the comments on this blog.

It would be good if Nick Palmer MP (Broxtowe), Hain's campaign manager, would comment on this on political betting that he frequents and posts on.

If Hain suggested these powers then questioned them that is outrageous.

Will Hennessy and co report this? You have to wonder.

Davis is wrong to say that "the protection of the public ought to be above politics". Questions of security and civil liberties are inherently political in nature. They concern the relationship between the citizen and the state, and the legitimate powers of government.

They cannot even be separated from narrow party politics. If the government proposes new powers, it is the duty of the opposition to scrutinise the proposal and point out any flaws. It is also the duty of anyone who disagrees with it on a point of principle to argue his or her case, whatever party he or she belongs to. But when that debate is happening in the context of electoral politics, winning or losing the argument will also affect the careers of those involved. So inevitably they will be influenced to some degree by electoral and personal considerations.

It is entirely reasonable to demand that these issues be approached in a serious manner, with an awareness of what is at stake. It is equally reasonable to demand some basic level of honesty. If Hain has acted as Reid allegedly alleges, then his approach to the "stop-and-question powers" has been unserious and dishonest. The public should hold it against him even if Brown doesn't.

Davis is also being overly optimistic in saying that the public will be "disgusted". Sadly, this is exactly that we've come to expect.

I notice that Hennesey and Kite both have the same distinctive whiny self regard .Perhaps its an institutional bias.

Peter Hain has lots and lots of form with terrorists of all sorts. It is hard to believe he would ever have advocated more powers against them.
But then again, he is an opportunist noted for his particularly poor judgement.

There's nothing that one 'up his own' narcissist hates more than a younger version of the same thing.

Two guys who sold out their principles for power, simple as that.

Am I alone in suspecting that Peter Hain is completely off his trolley? Every time I see him on the box he goes goggle-eyed and starts foaming at the mouth whenever he attempts to answer a question. The difference between him and Herr Doktor C.U. Jimmy is that the human dalek is literally demented, having had his brain replaced with a biometric passport chip to show the little people how much you could do with one.

I have never forgiven Hain for saying, "You can put away your placards, there isn't going to be a referendum."

Especially unforgivable since, if Blair engages in a little sleight of hand in Brussels before he departs, it may turn out to have been true.

Get a grip "Edward". You sound just like Reid and Hain. I have no doubt that you'll deny it.

As for not speaking for everyone I seem to think that the one of the whole points of this blog is that everyone should be able to say what they like, when they like. I s'pose it's a problem when people are really honest, ah son?
