Comment Moderation Is On

I've had to delete more than 30 comments in the last twelve hours either for foul and abusive language, anonymous trolling and the like. Apologies if I missed any. It's not clever and it's not funny and I'm sick to death of it. Comment moderation will now be switched on until certain people grow up or just disappear. Please remember that any post containing a swear word will be deleted without explanation.

Quite right Iain! Unlike LDV- you are 'moderating' for a valid reason- other than having the pi** taken out of you! Can you not 'block' the prunes who post abusive items?

Why can't these people see that if you have anything worth saying it doesn't need to be "enhanced" with swearing.

It's regrettable that you need to moderate.

Sorry this had to happen Iain, the no swearing rule was working just fine. We can be thankful that while these idiots are spreading their childish poison across the net, they are not reproducing.

Why don't you just make users register to comment? Wouldn't it be easier??

Removing comment moderation has been great for the reply threads until the usual trolls and Anon's start howling at the moon and spoil it, then they will degenerate very quickly like at Guido's. Now I very rarely find myself able to read through the sewer of comments there.
Stick to your guns Iain, I always enjoy reading the comments here and I would hate for it to be spoiled by a few cretins.

An unfortunate necessity, but you're completely right. Sometimes it's like sitting on a bus full of school kids.

I guess that they think if they overload you -you will give up.

Now who could possibly wish for that?

A word in your shell like Iain,

It looks like the McStalin trolls are trying to sabotage your Blog and make you look bad!
A typical response of a leftist is smash anything you do not like and that includes democracy!
You must have told a truth they did not like!
Anyway keep up the good work and im sure most of us can tell who the wreckers are.

Its a shame Iain , there have also been some great threads recently. People really are infuruatuing aren`t they ...

Agree with the commenters who note that a lot of these people also infest Guido's which I used to glance at it every day. For the last few months it has been crawling with foul-mouthed Neanderthals and adolescents and is intolerable. I cannot imagine who visits it any more.

Have to agree. The last thing you want is for it to deteriorate into something akin to Guido's cesspit. I have long since given it a very wide berth.

Not me . Quite agree verity that is why we need rules.

Verity: I suspect that you are one of the reasons why Iain has had to resort to comment moderation. It is not just swearing. But personal attacks on other posters. Why you and others like you believe that Iain is happy with cyber-bullies is beyond my comprehension.

It's a tough call (I wish I had your problem...).

Personally, I think that comment moderation, in general, is a Bad Idea; and the appeal of this site lies as much in the sparks which fly in the comments as it does in the original posting.

Unless you are prepared to vet comments promptly, 24/7, I fear you will find that, while you may curb the fuckwit element, a great many of the more interesting commenters will be deterred by the hurdle of censorship.

Isn't it just simpler (and ultimately more effective) to delete gratuitously offensive or trolling comments after the event? This policy seems to work well enough at CiF, which attracts more than its fair share of cranks.

I suppose the difference is that CiF can employ moderators whereas poor old Iain is doing this on his own.

Quite agree about Guido, though. It's deeply unpleasant without being even slightly amusing.
