Tory MEPs Must be Ranked by Tory Members

Iain Dale 8:51 PM

Can I endorse the contents of THIS excellent letter from Tim Montgomerie of ConservativeHome to David Cameron? It calls for Party members to be given the final say in the ranking of MEP candidates in the forthcoming selections. Apparently there is a proposal that the Party 'great and good' should be allowed to cook it up among themselves. Outrageous. Will these people never learn? The Conservative Party belongs to its members and they need to fight this proposal.

I echo your sentiments Iain. We must have a transparent and democratic selection process.

It only belongs to it's members until the party start to draw down on state funding.

Well said anoneumouse.

Any party that takes from the extended state funding, will from that point be a vehicle for the state, not its members as clearly no party will endanger its revenue stream.

Why would a bunch of Etonians want a selection system that was exclusive?

Expensive adverts don't get the vote out, door knocking and community action does. This is where the Lib Dems always used to score.

No amount of public funding or top down authoritarianism will help a party who's supporters refuse to campaign for it - and who, eventually, refuse to vote for it as Nulab supporters are now.

Much more of this arrogance and greed by the parties and they'll have to be replaced with people's parties.

Too right!

The Party is of the people for the people!

This great land was built from scratch into what it is today, the pride of the world, Masters of the Universe and the people that did that were your joe average Tory Party member.

Freedom, prosperity,it's all there!

The Tory Party members have, together, have made it what it is today and put it where it is today!

Doom.

I'm amazed this is even being considered, but then, democracy always has been seen as an optional extra for the Tories. We Lib Dems take our ranking for granted. :)

Most Tory Party members are mad, however...

Could lead to accusations of 'cash for seats' eh?
