New Labour New Fascists II

So I go down to the bank. Take out £1000 in cash. A few minutes later I get stopped by the Police. They find the cash in my wallet. They arrest me for no other reason than I have £1000 on me. It's up to me to prove my innocence. Is this really what we've come to? Are we really going accept this type of semi-fascistic governance? What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Slowly but surely we are losing our freedoms. I watched Tony Blair announce this new 'crackdown' on the Ten O'Clock News just now. The manic look in his eyes said it all. This is a man who is convinced he knows what is best for us. And so said many a dictator. Be warned.

Much as I dislike the guy,I found Blair a lot more credible on the news last night than our own Edward Garnier.Garnier took the usual lawyerly approach,Blair pointed out that he was introducing this because it was all that would work.Anything that would make life more difficult for drug dealers is fine by me.

I agree with Iain overall on this but think he has misunderstood the government proposal slightly. He would not have to explain why he had £1,000 on him but where it came from. So it would be a simple matter of calling his bank which would confirm he had withdrawn £1,000 the same day.

It might sound a rather naive question but was that £1000 anecdote true or merely analogous?

If it's true then given your relative fame you should kick up a stink; if not, then there are many real-life cases that would serve as more potent examples.

It does however represent another "crime" where the burden of proof has been placed on the accused...

It is absolutely true, and James is bang on the button.
