The Chameleon Army's on the March

As the nation takes Dave the Chameleon to its collective bosom (have you ever seen a negative ad backfire quite so spectacularly?) I am indebted to the reader who alerted me to the existence of the Chameleon Army T Shirt. I have already been getting emails at Politico's asking if we are going to produce Chameleon merchandise (er, no). As I said, if I were running the Tory Party marketing department I'd have it running off the presses already. So how long before we see a little army of Conservative Future canvassers sporting these T shirts, available at a mere $18.99 from HERE!

What about this design for the stars of Dave's new A-list?

The Conservative Party has a "marketing department"?

The downside is that the front of the T-shirt has some sort of brain in a firing line motif.

The upside is that there's a thong available!!!!!!!

One of us needs to get on the case of producing actual Dave the Chameleon material. While this stuff features chameleons and people will probably get the point I think something specific to the broadcast would be more fun.

Why do you think the ad has backfired?

What evidence have you got that this is the case other than a lot of politically minded people think it's a bit silly? We're hardly representative of UK public opinion and we were sure as hell not the target audience.

I'm not picking a fight, I'm seriously interested.

Iain, any idea how much research labour did before running the PPB?
I know its not aimed at tory voters, but as a negative campaign it should have had them reaching for the smelling salts not looking for a "Dave" the chameleon T shirt!

"(have you ever seen a negative ad backfire quite so spectacularly?)" - so you've forgotten the 'demon eyes' already have you? Only nine years ago but time goes so quickly when you're enjoying life in a prospering country.....

jm, anecdotal evidence from virtually everyone I've talked to who's seen it, who isn't an anorak. They thought it was petty and spiteful, albeit at times amusing. Hughes, yup, I agree the demon eyes adverts backfired. you;d have thought Labour might have learned from our mistake, but it seems not.

I bought ChameleonArmy.com yesterday...

They would say that talking to you Iain. Actually, the reaction I have heard is that people found it quite funny although it changed nobody's mind - light entertainment. People such as your good self are simply in danger of making it a success on "no sense of humour" grounds.

I too thought it was vaguely amusing - I certainly haven't had a sense of humour failure. Are you watching Question Time? Th audience seemed very against the ad.

I can't say I saw question time today, but let's face, even if they were against it, they still aren't representative of Labour's target audience.

People I've spoken to about it found the whole thing rather amusing. As far as I can see, it's done no harm. Political broadcasts don't get people talking generally. This one did. People won't really base their vote on that broadcast, and I don't think the Labour Party think that people will, either. The idea is to actually get the elections noticed. With 20 - 25% turnout in local elections, that's the real job.
