When I got home yesterday I opened an envelope containing my Conservative Party Conference pass. On the top right hand corner of the pass is this natty little logo, which I am presuming is the new logo for the Party. I rather like the way the tree tilts to the right...

That's a tree ???
A 'NewD irection'? Surely you Tories aren't that stupid?
It looks like a three year old has been let loose with a crayon. I love the way it tilts towards the crap. How much did this rebranding cost I wonder?
It looks like it's been drawn, then scrubbed out...
Like the Tories can't make their mind up.....
It looks like someone wrote something rude and it was scribbled out. Is this pre-emptive self-graffiti, to beat the people who defaced the "It's not racist..." billboards last year?
Hmmm... more like a the remains of a frenzied scratch card addict
At least they're are honest Waffle tree, we know what they are going to do to the country
Terrible isn't it?
wow - i can honestly say I love it! it looks modern, fresh and inspiring. do you dullards really prefer the soviet-style torch? get a grip...
Oh no, Iain! Now that you mentioned the tree tilts to the right, they'll recall the logo and redesign it!
I want to know how much that cost to have designed.
it must be a gag!
A joke, right? It's the most appalling so-called logo I've ever seen in my life, trees (stability) and direction don't really go, and that's if you can tell it's a tree in the first place.
Pure Dumb and Dumber. First we had Labour's "Forward, not Back" crap. Now this vapid nonsense. The slogan is meaningless like much of Cameron's new model Conservative party. Mejia students at Fulchester Polytechnic University College would be failed for this. As for the "tree" is this a cunning attempt at recycling old notepaper? Simply get out a blue marker and scribble our the torch. Job done. Either that or it is a Year 1 production from my local primary school. My donations to the party fund this bollocks. More fool me.
Actually, Iain, I don't think it is a logo: it looks like it had someone else's name on it and they've scraped it off so they can re-use it for you. Not that that's any reflection, naturally.
Iain, I think it is ok and more over I think it will grow on us. I hear that the colour changes through the seasons. Is that right?
Seriously, it is better that the soviet torch that Saachi spent millions on.
What the f***? Our membership subs go up to pay thousands of pounds to create a new logo to replace the Torch and the results of that is this?????
I can barely afford to be a Tory because of increases in membership subs. My money goes towards paying people for this? This has to be some kind of sick tasteless joke...
Surely the tree is tilting to its left?
I don't know what to think anymore, Mr Dale. Or believe. Game show formats for the conference, electronic-key-pads for activists to vote on policies. Whatever next?
The torch was too certain for an age of doubt. The lion looked great but when compared with Cameron would have been found lacking!
The fuzzy tree tipping right is an honest representation of an emerging new path, yet to be fleshed out in detail. Honesty is the best policy.
I'm not sure if this whole string is a joke but...
Surely the logo is still hidden - there is presumably a tree under there, but it has yet to be unveiled preoperly and will be in the lead up to/at the conference?
Crying out for a black felt tip
"still Tory"
on the white space next to the New Direction
i just joined the tories and it cost about £15 for a year. not sure the exact amount, but it wasn't much.
Could be that there is a pinting error in the slogan - perhaps it should have read " A New Dire Creation" - that would fit better with the logo
you're all wrong.
It's a mushroom cloud. ;-)
If Dave designed that, he should find a new 'pusher' bad Karma Dave.
I hope they don't expect me to go out canvassing with a logo like that !
I looked at again, and again unsure as to whether I like it or not. On balance it's crap and I hate it. As James says, have my subs have been wasted on this?
But Iain, are you sure that it's not just conference branding rather that the new Tory logo? It would be pretty incompetent to send the logo out on conference material before staging a big PR splash for the new logo and party branding. However crap.
I'm afraid I have to agree. It isn't a tree it is a cartoon of a tree. The message it gives is "we wanted to give an image of solid tree-like strength & environmentaslism but we weren't really sure of it"
The blurry tree logo shown on conservativehome is better. Maybe this is just conference branding. I hope
I like it. I like it a lot - 9/10 for the image - modern & engaging. I bet it would look better in colour too.
A New Direction is a bit weird, but I don't suppose this is the new slogan, is it?
Policy dictated by whichever way the wind blows? Sounds awful.
It looks like a pigeon shat on a UN soldier's beret.
The tree concept is great. But the logo itself is a bit dissapointing. I like Tim Montgomeries version!
It is pretty crap, I'm sorry to say.
Logo change to emphasise the "newness" of Cameron's NuConservatives?
A bit desperate.
A "New Direction": whichever way the wind blows....
Looks about like the trees after the 1987 storm...
Wonderful demonstration of PR Bullspiel
That must be designed to provoke annoyance...
Can't be the new log.
it's dreadful. the tree idea is good, but the fools have picked the wrong one; the one that was revealed on ConHome was much better. Can you really see that scribble going on election ballot papers next to the candidate's name? That scribble in one box and names like Adam Rickitt in the box next to it, oh Mr. Cameron . . . .
Well "A New Direction" is plainly the conference slogan and all conference slogans are a bit pants. It's ok, it's a tree which is cool.
I find the knee jerk cynicism from some of the commentors a bit waring.
I'm not sure what to think... Yes, it looks modern and fresh, but at the same time... I don't know... I admit that I can like it but the torch is the torch is the torch.
What I'm sure about is that awful slogan. New Direction? What is it about? Slovak ruling socialist party is called Direction - Social Democracy...
you've been had!
Beachhutman
Iain, wtf?
Is Cameron trying to appeal to 3 year olds?
It's fuzzy, just like his policies. I can't tell is he for the environment or eco-terrorism?
Come on, surely her majesty's opposition can do better. Have a word with them iain....
It looks fine. What is a shame, is that you seem to have picked up all the miserable gits from ConHome and then some. What's worse, they try desperately hard to be witty. You and Guido get a lot of traffic, but, as far as I'm concerned, you could happily lose half of it
How much do these people get paid to design something, that i could have done at the age of 2?
Clare Short?
Love the tree _ hate the 'New Direction' guff alongside it.
Very scribbley. Rubbish. Why not have a proper tree? I thought the Conservatives were the proper-treed classes.
Terrible. My two-year-old could do better.
Is that it? A scribble? Has it been rubbed out? Frankly I'd rather have a smiley face as a logo or something similarly idiotic.
Looks like a perfect symbol of fuzzy thinking to me
is the tree not just blowing the same way that the wind is?
Very amusing.
When is the real one coming out?
I bet that the real logo is underneath the scribble and will be revealed at conference as a stunt.
you cannot be serious?! That is appalling!!
I could have drawn a better looking tree when I was about 2!!!
Nice to see that someone has received their conference pass. How long will it take to reach the rest of us I wonder?
Great wheeze Iain...
Of course, there's always the possibility CCO takes your suggestion seriously and adopts the ink-smudge for real.

It looks like the Logo of a housing assosciation
hahaha that's dreadful
I liked the idea of the tree. I accept the need to have a strapline slogan (however trite) but I just think the final design is shabby. It smacks of a "that'll do" type attitude and by god, the last thing that Government should ever have is that.
Our logo must be detailed and distinct, like our intentions in government.
It looks like candyfloss (similar to Cameron's policies) or a puff of smoke (which we hope the Tories don't dissolve into at the next election).
Talking of puff of smoke and leaning to the right, wasn't there a song about: "Pass the Duchy to the right hand side"?
Its an ad for toilet paper.
New direction. Sure. Up shit creek.
If you look at in the mirror it leans to the left!
My friends, it is a manifestation of the human condition, as seen by a lurching turkey.
How is moving to the right "a new direction". It's only new in geological terms
Iain, I suspect that this is actually the branding for the conference, not the new party logo!
The logo looks like the front of george micheals jeans after a night on the heath.
maybe a big tent next time
you *are* kidding Iain.
is that supposed to be a tree?
looks like somebody drew a tree and then tried to scribble it out i.e. "we arent really sure about ourselves anymore. but we have Nicey Nicey Dave as leader"
this is a picture of an eton mess not a tree.
very appropriate for the new logo
Surely it's some fluffy windswept candy floss, though I really like Jonathan's interpretation of the frenzied scratch card user.
You fibber Iain! That's just part of the scratchcard you bought on your way home...
"wow - i can honestly say I love it! it looks modern, fresh and inspiring. do you dullards really prefer the soviet-style torch? get a grip..."
Please define "modern" for me? By the looks of that logo, your definition of modern = messy.
It's fresh insofar as it's new. But new doesn't mean good.
Inspiring?! How the hell is a childish scribble inspiring?! The torch suggested (to me) a sense of purpose and belief. That was inspiring. This just looks like something a retard came up with during playtime.
Hopeless!
It looks like the logo of a small, regional building society.
It is shit. End of.
Surely it is a head-bandaged smoker colliding with the pavement?
The old logo wasn't a "soviet torch" - it was the arm from the statue of liberty (though Thatchers version was better as it just showed the hand and torch rather than the full arm as in Howards version).
Well (ducking for cover) I like it !
And considering I ran the petition to save the torch I accept I am making a complete volte-face.
I think it is contemporary and quite radical. Not sure about "A New Direction" part - but the tree itself is good.
A quick re-mix for you all!
I don't think they thought through the Freudian word-play...
( ;-P)

If that is for real all I can say is, it reminds me of Hiroshima.
Easy on the eye, but very, very vague. Reminds me of someone..
As a long time tory member I could not care less what the new logo is!
Just done a straw poll of teenagers in my house as logo/brands seem to dominate their lives.
Verdict, its young and modern.
Conhom efforts, BORING..
Is it a motorway sign - an updated 'Diversion' ?
"Just done a straw poll of teenagers in my house as logo/brands seem to dominate their lives.

Conhom efforts, BORING.."
Wow, what a represenative sample. I might not be a teenager anymore but when I was that age I would have looked on this as a pathetic messy scribble. So would most other teenagers I knew. Teenagers love to take the mick and this is a perfect target.
The ConHome efforts in contrast look much more professional. I suspect the teenage opinion you heard was a typical rebellious "we're opposed to anything smart and respectable" sentiment.
Besides, we have an ageing electorate so asking teenagers (most of whom either can't vote or don't bother to vote) their opinion isn't the solution to this dispute.
Iains scan doesnt really do it justice. The real logo is green and red, this white one is just for the conference pass. Its not that bad in real life. Grows on you. Just like cameron i suppose.
Al Gore will be happy to see that Tories are now his fellow silly tree-huggers!
David Cameron is obviously not old enough to recall the '70s porn mag called (for reasons the waffle tree alluded to 10.29)- New Direction
Tree hugging hippie crap!
To me, it looks like Boris Johnson's hair...
Utter Nonsense. Perfectly reflects the party though. Vapid, talentless, childish, clueless, shallow and gullible (£40k for that). Dear oh dear oh dear...
They paid 'How Much'? I could have let them have several similar trees from a variety of Clipart CD's.
And these idiots want public funding.................I think not!
It represents Camerons strength of character and intent. Wishy washee and the end of the Conservative Party.
WHERE ARE THE REAL CONSERVATIVES. WHO IS GOING TO SEE OFF THIS RIDICULOUS MAN AND THE EQUALLY RIDICULOUS MAUDE??
They've got a Welsh one, a Scottish one and a "just Conservative" one.
Wot - noto bothered to do one for England?
I guess they don't want English votes then?
I've just watched you on News24 on this subject, and I've seen my crayon comment used by several news agencies, but I must protest!
I am no Tory! Let alone a Tory activist!
Just to set the record straight. If I had any money I'd bloody sue for defamation of character.
Newsnight is at it now.
My real name next to that comment. I've just re-joined Labour now that Tory Tony is on his way out - they'll think I'm a ringer.
Mind you, I could turn this to nefarious good use...
Wait 'til I rip into their policies - if and when they ever have any. I'll do it here so the news reports go like "one tory activist says that Cameron is a talentless no-mark with the intellectual clout of an inflamed bunion"
I bet you are pleased they all read your blog though Iain.
Timber!
You lot obviously havn't seen the colour version yet. I know that it looks "like a scribble" when it is only two colours, but the full-colour version actually looks very good. It shows what the party symbolises these days.
It does look like the work of a 3 year old. What are the ages of Dave's brood
