Margaret Beckett's a Shoo In!

Tom Harris has this "evidence" that reforms* haven't yet quite seeped through to the House of Commons authorities, who still seem to be under the influence of the government whips office!

* For the avoidance of doubt, this is a joke.

'Shoo in'

I hope it remains a joke, a very sick one if it comes true.

Iain. You seem to be having a bad hair week on your blog. Even Bob Piper is having a dig. Shoe-In? An ex-leader of the Labour Party , recently a Cabinet member and slaughterer of kine in the unpartisan role of Speaker? Heaven forfend!

As part of Milliband's overtures to Iran they have obviously employed Ahmadinejad as a consuiltant on the process.

Grumpy Old Man - Shoo-in is spelled "shoo-in". It has absolutely nothing to do with footwear.

One of the easiest tasks in the world is to shoo geese into a pen by waving a piece of cloth at them and saying, "Shoo! Shoo!" They run into the pen quacking. They don't rebel. They don't run off in all directions. They go to where you're shooing them.

It's an American phrase, often misunderstood by the English.

Hence Humphry Lyttleton's favourite joke: Blacksmith "Have you ever shoed a horse?" Aspirant Apprentice "No, but I once told a pig to piss off."
