Another Labour MP Supports a Low Tax Agenda

This low tax agenda is catching on. Further to Denis MacShane’s remarkable article in the Telegraph last week, there was a BBC World Service discussion on Politics UK between Mark Wallace of the Taxpayers' Alliance and Gisela Stuart at the end of last week (aired over the weekend) in which she effectively says Government does too much, centralised control is ineffective and wasteful and that powers should be returned to the individual. It’s an encouraging follow up to the MacShane piece, and a sign that some in the Labour party are moving pretty fundamentally - either out of principle or electoral necessity.

Listen to it HERE. (11 minutes 40 seconds in)

That sounds like "subsidiarity" to me. Are you sure these sentiments are not part of some broader EU agenda?

We need to raise taxes opnm those over 80,000 a year to 50% on income tax. It is tax cuts for the poor we need. Not cutting in public anmd social services.

It's the start of the Labour "Blue Dog" strategy similar to the Democrats in GOP seats in the US. Watch out for lots of marginal MP's signing up for it in the coming months. What I want to see is the Tory "Red Fox" strategy where lots of Tory candidates in animal loving suburban marginals say they won't vote to re-introduce fox hunting as part of a subliminal indication that the New Labour settlement is safe just as Blair protected key tenets of Thatcherism. The battle between "Blue Dog" v Red Fox could be fun!

And Gisela Stuart's partner is . . .

Right let's be very clear as to what is required to stop the ghastly stasification of the UK. 1) A savage cut of all taxes and the introduction of flat tax. 2) Mass sackings of state bureaucrats. 3) The removal of the dead had of state control from as much of life as possible inclunding and especially from education and healthcare.

There. That wasn't difficult was it.

It's irrelevant what the odd Labour mp says. Given the state of labour finances it will be the unions that decide future Labour strategy. I can't see Bob Crow advocating tax cuts.

Where were these geniuses when Brooon was raping my pay packet?

It really beggers belief that NuLab are now showing signs of wanting to reduce taxation. I didn't hear them howling when Brooon proposed to scrap the 10p rate. Can someone less lazy than me see how they voted on the 2007 budget?

To be sure, these two clowns a outriders for their masters voice...

"it will be the unions that decide future Labour strategy. I can't see Bob Crow advocating tax cuts."

And I can't see the RMT having any formal influence over Labour policy, since it left the movement some time ago.

Well, she is defending an ultramarginal seat, Birmingham Edgbaston, but she's only got two years left as an MP...

At least she's being honest about tax, unlike her high tax government!

Well said, Gisela! Listen up, Gordon, this is what an honest and decent politican sounds like. No lies, no spin and no deception - so totally alien to lying snout in the troughs like you.

And Gisela led the people's campaign for a referendum on the Lisbon Constitution. What a gal she is!

Nulab, you've been looking for a leader, well here she is.

And Gisela Stuart's partner is

That angel without wings, Derek Scott who, with those other wingless angels: Gisela, Michael Gove, Kate Hoey, Frank Field, Mike Hancock, Greg Hands, David Heathcote Amory, Nick Herbert founded IWAR -
I Want a Referendum - and fought for our people's democracy.

Don't pick on Gisela or Derek, anon, or I'll pick on you big time - alright?

Gisela Stuart talks such a lot of sense she should be in the Conservative Party.

She has been talking sense since before Labour were behind in the polls, to her credit.

No she will be the next leader of the Labour Party.

I was going to support Gisela Stuart but as usual someone has got there before me.

There are still one or two Labour MPs who are worth their salt. Denis McShite is not one of them.

If everyone, and I mean everyone, paid a flat 10% income tax I suspect the Treasury would be better off and, in the absence of the need for detailed calculations, we could get rid of 99% of the Revenue office.

Sorry guys, the one place Gisela Stuart does not belong is the Conservative Party. She's realised that she's going to lose next time unless she puts the appearance of "blue water" between herself and the anti-Midas that is Gordon Brown. In prctice this has meant her being spectacularly disloyal to the Labour Party. Fun to watch, but born out of desperation. Remember - this didn't work for Tories in 1997, and it won't work for her.

Locally, she's quite happy to spread the most outrageous - I'll not say lies, as I don't want to be sued by an MP - but you know what I mean. She is also incredibly thin-skinned. She's reported most of the local Conservative councillors (including me) to the Council's Standards Officer. The net result of which is not very much really.

If (and it's a big if) she did change sides, she's have to find a seat elsewhere. She wouldn't be wanted in Edgbaston.
