"When a man is hanged, he does not lose his head. The way Barzan was executed is shameful" - Defence lawyer Issam al-Ghazzawi, about the decapitation of Saddam Hussein's half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti.
"Told him. I had to because I don't want him to come to the group. The a****** hasn't sent his bloody thing back. Fancy having an answerphone message like that. For goodness sake" - Voicemail mistakenly left by a social services worker for Mark Hobbs, who had forgotten to return a registration form for an anxiety and stress management workshop run by the Borough of Poole.
"It is serious and it will, I believe, be with us for a generation" - Home Secretary John Reid telling the House of Commons that the conflict with al Qaida may last as long as the Cold War.
"It is an unholy mess and a waste of time, totally absurd" - Father-of-two Kenneth Palmer responding to East Renfrewshire Council's decision that parents must undergo criminal background checks if they want to get on a school bus to ensure their children's seatbelts are properly fastened.
"The modern Conservative Party is about replacing the failed New Labour experiment, not aping it" - Conservative leader David Cameron writes in an article for the Daily Telegraph.

Blair's support for Bush's Iraq lunacy will affect us for a lot lot longer than that.

Indeed - 'aping' implies a caricature of the original. Cameron for Blair is total like-for-like replacement.

There is an interesting piece on John Redwood's blog about this.

It is always a possibility. Something to do with the length of drop and body weight, I believe.
I rather like the Chinese method of a bullet in the back of the head and a bill to the family.
Re: 18DS "I can't get no satisfaction"
You missed one; "I warmly welcome the decision of Sinn Fein to call a special conference on policing in Northern Ireland."- Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London.
Not exactly sure what the Mayor of London has to do with this, but I'm sure London taxpayers are happy that the Mayor is taking such a 'strategic' view....
Iain
I thought Buster George was winding me up when he mentioned that a decapitated head could still function. So he pointed me to this link:

Iain, I think the execution was horribly botched. It is not hard to do! Iraq can't continue to make these mistakes, it will cost too many innocent lives (And more of my tuppence worth on my blog).
The seatbelt thing though is just bizzare. Can't the bus driver just make sure the parent isn't kiddie fidling with the other kids? Can't be hard can it?
Mr Dale -
I don't understand the second quote. Can you give us some context? A source?
Thanks.

Not much evidence of this so far Dave; all you've done to date is follow the Blair textbook.
Gordon Brown - "I'm suddenly off to India to miss my own Party to celebrate the Act of Union."
I wonder is there something about right wing thinking that contains its own destruction .We rail against the state because we want to do as we like but then , lack the discipline to compromise together to defeat the forces of evil.
This silly moaning about David Cameron is so harmful and for the most part lacks any substance
Honestly I sometimes wish this was not all virtual and I could see the faces of those intent on allowing the Socialists in. It will hard not to find one to punch when Brown is grinning on the front page celebrating victory.
Damn you ...damn you all to hell!

Judging by the number of comments in response to the articles in the Telegraph itself, and in response to your previous post about it ('Cameron Seeks to Reassure the Right', posted yesterday), the Right are, far from reassured, more distrustful. The events of the last 10-15 years has left most voters (of all persuations) more cynical. There is this huge credibility gap that cannot be bridged by generalities, sound bites, or 'motherhood and apple pie' statements. The language of politicians seems to be just too downright unreliable a conveyance for meaning - like getting on a bus reassuringly displaying 'Town Centre', only to find that it actually takes you to a town centre in the next county. This language-meaning gap needs to be fixed.
Counting the comments (here and on the Telegraph website) expressing skepticism about David Cameron's conservatism isn't a scientific poll; nevertheless, it reveals a hugh depth of feeling among traditional Conservative supporters. It is going to take some very firm, unequivocal, plainly-expressed-in-clear-terms-of-action, policy committments to win back the confidence of traditional and right-wing conservatives. Only UKIP seem to be offering anything like this - hence the expression of support for them.

Says it all about Europe
david A - What a load of cobblers. After the Blackpool conference half the membership of the Labour Party walked out . Blair saw a Sierra and realised Socilism was wrong. In that moment he set fire to the only thing the Labour Part ever believed in . It nev er forgave him and now we are getting its foinal victory BROOOON.
David Cameron spruces up the image and everyone whines like a load of sorry bitches. I do not belive , in the quiet confessional of the voting booth ,that so many people are so stupid as to continue their egomaniacal flights of fancy
newmania,
So point me to the substance behind the image.
Newmania, "in the quiet confessional of the voting booth", Blair is going to vote for Cameron. Says it all, really.
