David Davis in World Record Abseil - CCHQ on By-Election Alert!

Tomorrow morning David Davis will be breaking a record. He will become the first civilian to abseil 510 feet from the Humber Bridge - all all in the name of charity. It's part of the Humber Bridge 25th anniversary celebrations and he'll be doing the abseil for the Castle Hill Cancer Care Unit. DD will be first down, followed by a group of Royal Marines.

If you'd like to sponsor him, send a cheque made payable to the Castle Hill Oncology Health Centre, David Davis Charity Abseil, FREEPOST NEA8148, 32 Main Street, Willberby, Hull, HU10 6BR.

Rumours that the organisers had originally asked another local MP, John Prescott, to take part are totally unfounded, as they couldn't find any ropes strong enough.

I'm told that DD will be doing the abseil a second time on Saturday, when the Blue Peter Cameras will be present. I do hope he will be wearing his hoodie...!

Media enquiries to percya@parliament.uk

PS And I do know the difference between rock climbing and abseiling - couldn't find any good abseiling pictures!

Maybe they could use one of the bridge's suspension cables for Prezza, that might just hold him!

Is there any truth to the rumours that the right to "check" the ropes is being auctioned off for lots of money?

On a more serious note, Well done David.

Tonbridge blog - Ha ha!

God, I wish David Davis had won the leadership. He is a fine individual and a good thinker.

Not entirely convinced that no ropes strong enough could be found for JP, just in case though, I shall start sourcing something suitable for that Mussolini moment.

not quite iain. its impossible to abseil down the entire height of the bridge as it is 510 feet from sea level to the tip, unless he plans on gettnig his feet wet he will be stopping at the base of one of the legs meaning he will be abseiling just under 500 feet. its still a record though for a civillian abseil down a bridge in the uk (rather than from a bridge).

Have you seen this sensible suggestion from our Republican cousins?

Should the Tory party consider taking similar action or would it alienate too much of our natural constituency?

The humber bridge really is a fantastic engineering achievement. Looks so imposing as you approch it on the A 62.

Why did they stick it in Hull though?

Wish I had DD's fitness to do all this. He's got 30 years on me as well.

It is a world record and it is about 510 feet from the top of the tower to the bottom.

I would have thought "Butch" Prescott could have supplied his own from his extensive collection of cowboy paraphernalia. Any luck he would only have gone 504ft before the noose stopped him.
