The Sunday Telegraph has a copy of the letter being circulated around Labour backbenchers. It says every Labour member wants the handover to be conducted in a"dignified, orderly and efficient manner''. But it says a prerequisite for that is "a clear timetable and transparent procedures''. The letter goes on: "We thereforeask the NEC, in consultation with the Prime Minister, to lay out, no later than the end of the current Parliamentary session, a clear timetable and procedure for the election of a new Labour party leader.''
Note that last bit - it leaves open the possibility for a new Labour Party leader to be a different person than the PM. So Gordon could be elected Labour leader while Tony stays as PM.

Errr... hasn't Guido had the letter up all day?
It shows how gutless these people are; they're asking persmission for him to go not demanding he leave now! If they had any balls they'd demand Brown move against him ASAP or lose their backing later.
Blair. Brown. They're as bad as each other. In fact, I go as far as to say I'd rather have Blair.
Bring on David Cameron.
As a long term expat maybe I'm not up to date, can Blair just simply hand over to the awful Brown ?
Surely there has to be a party election and the winner go thru' the motions of being asked by the Queen to form a gov. etc ?
