How Big is a Billion?

A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion minutes ago, Jesus was barely dead.
A billion seconds ago, it was 1974.
A billion pounds of UK government spending ago was just 15 hours, 6 minutes and twenty seconds ago.

Makes you think.

UPDATE: A reader has just told me about a claim by Croydon LibDems that their local council failed to collect £9 billion in Council Tax (the realfigure was £9 million). Click HERE if you think I'm making this up. Seems they went to the same maths class as LibDem Treasury Spokesman Julia Goldsworthy, who also doesn't know her billions from her elbow.

Lets have a whip round and buy them an abacus - better not give them any cash though - they might lose it or blow the lot on defacating rent boys!

I once read a Focus leaflet that stated students will have an average debt of £330,000,00p. I think one of the 0's was a misprint after they got carried away hitting the same key in an attempt to make the sum seem as large as possible.
