Quote of the Day: William Hague

"It would be wrong to construct a government, which wouldn't be stable, which wouldn't have a prime minister elected by the people of this country and wouldn't be submitting a major constitutional change to a referendum of the country."

William Hague

Lead on, Field Marshal Hague...to the barricades!

List of rebellion and direct action here:

I fear it might come to this...or at least the threat of this.

There are 10million voters who are being sidelined by these latter-day Nazis and their putsch....which will hopefully fail. If we all get angry, or at least visibly agitated, then the Libs and wiser Labour heads like Blunkett, Reid and Darling will see sense.

But because Dave couldn't seal the deal this is what may happen.

When do you have the post mortem?

In his Telegraph article on 26th April, Boris said the backing of Nick Clegg in the first debate was a plot by Mandy.

What if Nick Clegg has meant right from the start to string the Tories along in the negotiations, and then issue such unreasonable demands, they can't say yes. He then dumps them and skips off to Mandy, for a fanatical Europhile future together.

Meanwhile, we the people, are totally betrayed by the little traitor. Is this the new politics?

Hague looked tense and nervous - he has no need to unless he loses his nerve.

He should look at the longer game.

A Lab/Lib pact would bring both those parties into electoral contempt - first time ever I've agreed with John Reid.

It would also only last five minutes and be followed by an election which would return a clear Conservative majority.

It is as simple as that - just hold fire until you see the whites of their eyes.

Or as Corporal Jones would say 'Don't Panic!'

We don't elect Prime Ministers in this country, we elect MPs.

Hague and Iain are wrong and should stop repeating this falsehood.

Iain I had to quickly explain to my four year old that what I had in fact said was "NOOOOOO that bunch just utterly CAN`T !!!!"

I said something else but I don`t want the boys picking up tha sort of language.

I do not believe what I am seeing and this would all be on the back of bought votes from Parties that the English cannot vote for. Thats in places that have more votes than me anyway...its a sick sick farce.

@newjamie. "We don't elect Prime Ministers in this country, we elect MPs". Then why the hell we had these leaders'debate in the TV who put themselves as the PM when their party wins.

Will the Lib Dems agree to the invocation of the Civil Contingencies Act to quell widespread protest and dissent?

Unfortunately for Hague he is also trying to put in a prime minister not elected by the country and refusing to give the country a referendum on electoral reform was also his policy until about 15 minutes ago.

btw Am I the only one who remembers the PEB attacking the concept of coalition haggling behing closed doors? The was yours wasn't it?

Do we thing Brown is bovvered?

Dear Robert - the tories gained 100 seat, more than fpor 80 myears.

Labour lost 100 seats more than virtually ever in thbeir history.

The deal was signed, albeit against the backdrop of expenses and these contorted leaders debates (the point of which now escape me if we are to have an unelected PM). The ground over which the deal was sealed was of course gerrymanderd by Labour. Totally biased constituency boundaries.

But lets ignore this. Brown has been heavily defeated and he ought as his constitutional duty to have told the queen to let Cameron try to form a government. He is a creep.

Newjamie - if we do not elect prime ministers why do we have prime ministeial debates.

Jimmy - the electorate has left us with an unedifying situation. So the PPB was correct, pity the nation did not listen. If Brown had done his constitutional duty we could have had a minority govt (we may still) that too would have meant coming to arrangements so the country could be governed. I presume you want the country to be governed.

@trevorsden

So far as I know the rule remains that whoever can carry the house gets to govern. the voters didn't give us a working majority and they haven't given you one for almost a quarter of a century. Blame boundaries if it make you feel better but consider the possibility that the voters don't like us much now and haven't liked you for a generation. Them's the rules. If you want a presidency then campaign for it. FWIW I think Bumface will get it (and be a disaster but that's another story). Whingeing that this is your entitlement is very unattractive though.

Duh! Since when has the Prime Minister been elected by the people?
