The new Speaker is elected on June 22nd. The English school summer holidays start on July 17th. That means they've either got to cram an election into that gap or wait until the schools go back on September 1st and people have returned from holiday (ignoring those who have kids at private schools with longer holidays).

If true ( a truck load of salt needed here ) it may indicate a conspiracy (hey its the internet).

Brown plan would eb as follows:

1) Expenses scandal changes terms of political debate ( getting attention of catastrophy in the economy and the fact the Govt can't hold the line against its collapsing balance sheet much longer ).
2) Create dividing lines - think moats and genetleman's clubs.
3) Reshuffle and dispatch your enemies in the name of being tough on sleaze .
4) Go for the election that you know know would be a disaster in 2010.

If this were true it would require the cooperation of a certain newspaper which has been shown to have surprising No10 links recently.

Or I'm I getting just a bit paranoid ?

Surely he's referring to the by-election in Martin's constituency when he steps down?

Strange times Iain. But from the drivel Brown is speaking right now on PMQs he'll hold on until the white coats come for him.

I would be simply amazed if Gordon *ever* calls an election. I'm sure that even come next May he'll feign a bad cold and try to duck out of it.

Just listening to Harman on the expenses system - this repetition of 'Gentleman's club' sounds a bit class-warfare-laden, don't you think? Still and all; we all know that class warfare is a tactic that Labour never stoop to, so it can't be that.

Given Gordon's penchant for avoiding elections is it not surprising that his name has not been mentioned as a candidate to fill the vacant Speaker's chair?

My guess is it will be an October election, Brown will not wish a solitary by-election to happen in the Autumn.
A resounding defeat for Labour at this would resonate with the public, reinforcing their view that the Party in power is most culpable for the mess we are in today.
More so because throughout their term in office they have had a comfortable majority over voting in Parliament, loaded the bases on evey select committee to make sure the Labour way held sway and added a tribal Speaker to boot.
Many political strategists would advise him to hold the General election then...but, who knows for sure it is Macavity we are dealing with here.

Is this the same Gordon Brown?

"I will listen and I will learn. I will strive to meet people's aspirations.

I want to lead a government humble enough to know its place - where I will always strive to be - on people's side. " Gordon Brown 11 May 2007.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6646349.stm

When will the election be then?

Labour will spiral to massive defeat at the June elections, Brown will be ejected and a new labour leader elected.

Its inconceivable that there then cannot be an election, based on some reforming platform designed to prop up labours core vote (before it dissipates completely) and persuading the terminally gullible that economic nirvana is just round the corner.

As stated its probable given the time for leadership elections and summer holidays that it cannot be before late September.

PS
Labours Chief Whip, Nick Brown - the egregious up the but crack best mate of Gordon Brown, claimed 18 grand for unreceipted food bills. Its precisely because he is anything but a gentleman that parliament finds itself in this mess.

I wish the election would be under PR. Labour may well be persuaded for reasons of self-interest (ie, only way to avoid total wipeout). Whereas the right reason would be to introduce PR as the only way to engage the British public once again. Sign the petition on this at No. 10 and pass on info to everyone you know.
