Eurovision Live Blog

Just got back to Dale-Simmons towers from Wales, and what better way to spend the evening than live blogging Eurovision! I shall be rating every song throughout the contest. Do join in in the comments.

10.46 How embarrassing was the Bosnian voting guy?

10.45 Jane Merrick wants me to live blog the voting! Sorry. I have apparently been snoring through it according to my other half, who is really annoyed that Casualty hasn't be on.

9.54 OK, I'm backing Denmark. So that's the kiss of death for them then.

9.48. Spain. Sounds more ike Turkey. Spain really are crap at Eurovision. Always have been. 4.

9.45. Finland. Eurobeat-tastic. 7.

9.42. UK. Truly terrible. This is a song for a musical, not Eurovision. 3.

9.38 Romania. Quite catchy. Midtable mediocrity I suspect. 7.

9.34 Ukraine. Mediocre. Nothing else to say. 5.

9.28 Norway. The singer is what they describe on Neighbours as "a bit of a spunk". Shame the song was crap. 4.

9.25. Albania. I have lost the will to live. Utter shite. 4.

9.20 Turkey. They are consistently shite at Eurovision. Their songs are always the same. Dreary and jumpy. 4.

9.17 Germany. Pec-tastic! Didn't like the song though. 6.

9.12 Denmark. Well, ding dong. Copenhagen here I come. Nice beat. Nice, ahem, everything:). 8.5. Joint favourite with Iceland and France.

9.11 Estonia. Forgettable. 5.

9.07. Malta. Nice ballad bit not strong enough to win. 7.

9.02 Moldova. I think it is safe to say Graham Norton won't be visiting Moldova next year. Dancing was truly awful. 3.

8.57 Bosnia. This was good until they introduced the national element to it. Somewhat militaristic! 6.5.

8.55 Graham Norton is doing very well so far.

8.53 Azerbaijan. Promising intro, then they showed the lead singer. Slapped by the ugly stick. Boptastic, but won't win. No one wants to go there next year. 6.

8.50 Russia clearly don't want to win two years in a row. Awful. 5.

8.45 Armenia. Oh dear. Truly terrible. 4.

8.41 Greece. Would do very well in Heaven, but too forumlaic. Like the drums though. 7.

8.39 Some have suggested I do this on CoverItLive. Sorry, not tonight. Have to be monitoring some political stuff at the same time.

8.38 Iceland. Very Delta Goodrem. A proper song. My joint favourite so far with France. 8.5

8.34. Portugal. A feel good song, but a bit twee. Graham Norton likes it. I didn't really. 6.

8.29 Croatia. Sounds a bit too Greek. Don't think they will trouble the scorers. 5.

8.25 Sweden. Terrible verse, wonderful chorus. Very Eurovision. Will do well. I'll give it 8.

8.21 France. This is more like it. I love Patricia Kaas. I have 5 or 6 albums by her! They haven't had a good song since Amina and Le Dernier qui parle. I like this! She's a fantastic singer. I'm giving that 8.5!

8.17 Israel. Their songs always sound similar. Hebrew is not a great language for songs like this. A bit to many coughing sounds. But quite a pleasant song. Again, 6.5.

8.13 Ok, here we go with Lithuania. Hmmm. growing on me. Well, it did until I looked up and saw the hat. I'll give that 6and a half out of ten.

8.12 Why are Eurovision hosts always so awful?

8.08 Loving the white costumes.

8.05 Currently watching the intro stuff. I wish they'd get on with it.

New judging this year. 50% from phone votes, 50% from national juries to cut down on partisanship. With Andrew L-W writing the song and a good singer too, if we get carted around the ground, it's another European Institution we should leave pronto. ;-)

Not very good so far...

Looking for other Eurovision Twitterers http://twitter.com/dadge

Mr Dale,
As an Evertonian for life I understand that losing hurts (we've done enough of it for years before St David Moyes) so I thank your team for lying down for us today and thus allowing The Blues to nose ahead of Villa.

Dick Puddlecote said...

French girl sounded like she was constantly clearing her throat!

UK have a great draw at 23.

Anonymous said...

Think the German entry will win the male vote. He has got Dita von Teese doing an erotic dance on stage.....somehow I think all eyes will be somewhere else than on the singer, don't you? Be interesting to see what camera angles are allowed on the BBC. Mind you if he'a on after 9....who knows

Martin Curtis said...

Not done your live blog since Lordi's amazing victory.

Here's to another Lordi-esque victory tonight.

This is the only thing I have ever stopped supporting the UK for (and I hate myself for it). But, if you keep putting in the same sort of crap, you'll keep getting the same result.

Alestorm for Eurovision.

Was quite liking Sweden.........so should I watch it all, or go to ITV to watch lovely Piers?? Decisions, decisions.........

Donal Blaney said...

You're being far more generous than me!

Bosnia and Malta to surprise. Maybe a back and lay at Betfair. ;-)

Sweden was f'ing terrible. Loving Portugal though.

Tommy Rayder said...

My favourite so far is France. Sweden was too strange for me....Croatia was horrible.

Adrian said...

Sweden and France so far. I like this Portuguese girl too - bit of a dark horse?

What are the odds on UK not making the top half?

Anonymous said...

Would it not make more sense to use a live blog e.g. CoverItLive.

If our commentator didn't use sarcasm, this show would be unwatchable.

No, Greece, no! Don't do it!

Martin Curtis said...

I agree with Graham Norton - what is it with Iceland putting in a song they can win with -how can they afford to fund Eurovision next year?

Rock Ballad - and quite liked it. Best so far.

Anonymous said...

Everything is very black and white clothes-wise. I'm still favouring Malta and Norway

Dick Puddlecote said...

Drool factor puts Iceland top so far.

Tommy Rayder said...

Iceland was good and catchy. Also, I could not help moving a bit during Greece. I bet ya Greece will come close to winning.

Pam Nash said...

What's with the Russian song? Frightening. :)

Roy said...

Armenia - wasn't that the Anadin Brothers from Doctor and the Medics?

Pam Nash said...

Azerbaijan is the sort of song that does well in E'vision - the bird's quite attractive, as well.

Adrian said...

If Iceland win they'll stage it in a tent.

Some nice Azeri Europop - infinitely preferable to that Greek Eurocr-p

Dick Puddlecote said...

Sorry, but I can't believe the Azeri girl is not miming. Too perfect!

Dick Puddlecote said...

Azeri lead singer ugly? That says a lot, Iain. ;-)

Catholic Conclave said...

If your from Armenia, it was the greatest thing since their last entry.

Martin Curtis said...

Umm Iain - if you rate based on traditional Euro songs - you ain't picking a winner. That's the point, that's why we don't win any more - we keep doin that.

Malta's entry is just a big Broadway 11.00 number. The problem is, so is ours. And Malta's is by far the better of the two.

Germany = Very Ricky Martin = Very yesterday. Approve of the Marilyn Mason link. susect it will win - but it's cr*p.

Norway's Alexander is young, handsome, can sing and can play the violin. I hate him. I hate him so much.

Cmon Iain, Norway was great. Folky and oodles of charisma - must count for something.

Denmark....very forgettable...

Ukraine = pole dancer. Nuff said.

Paul Halsall said...

Best so far - Croatia, Germany, and Norway. All such cute guys. (Although I think the Greek guy might more, umm, comme ca). And Sweden was good.

The UK's occasonal ballad entry. Nothing different - part of the normal UK cycle.

Fail. Not a win. Alestorm next year.

Lloyd-Webber looks more and more like Davros!!

I really, really wanted to support the UK entry. Unfortunately it was awful and entirely forgettable... Favourite so far is Portugal.

Tommy Rayder said...

I disagree Iain. I think the UK song is one of the best.

strapworld said...

Norton is quite exceptional. But if he did it for as long as Terry I am sure he will get the same jaundiced view!!

Agree with most of your views.

I thought it was a song contest I am fed up with prancing around!

Not a sheep said...

Why did Dita Von Teese cover up more than in rehearsals?

Pam Nash said...

The voting will be more entertaining than the songs, as usual..............

Adrian said...

Hedging your bets re UK I see, Iain! I tend to agree with you, but it got a good reception though, didn't it

adam1516 said...

Lmfao. I have to question Dale's taste in music. He gave some of these acts SEVEN out of ten? Stick to politics, Dale, you berk!

Anonymous said...

but denmarks was written by and sounded like ronan keetting how danish is that ffs

Jimmy Codpiece said...

Actuallt I thought Germany were rather good, at least it wasn't Eurobeat drivel like most of the rest. I'm guessing they won't win though; Europeans don't seem to care for the Germans for some reason.

Anonymous said...

You seem to attract people who like tacky music. Britain had a decent entry - the sort that could be performed on a stage in the UK or US and actually sell tickets. No idea why so many people, including you, think it's too West End musical. I don't even know if that, if it were true, by itself is a bad thing.

Europe proves once again that it's music is as unchanging as Gordon Brown (thought I'd bring in some talk of politics.)

Dick Puddlecote said...

Unscientific, but I voted for Iceland in less than 10 seconds. Fanny Puddlecote is trying to vote for the three Ukrainian male chests and still can't get through after 6/7 minutes!

UK, the pervs of Europe

Fidothedog said...

I hope Gordoom did not offer support to our entry, else its nil points all night long.

I'm in the Iceland camp.

There's a joke somewhere about camp, but I'm not brave enough.

Alestorm next year.

Got to be worth a punt. Some shekels on Ukraine at 21/1 on Betfair as Mrs P has just got through after eroding the redial button.

The Night family voted Norway even though Jack Jnr gave every act with a blonde girl 10.
We have the dire French and the Moldovans at joint last.

Would not be surpried if the Folk thing at the end won. Northermn Europ is very big onthe folk metal thing - so a folk revival is possible.

Pam Nash said...

Graham Norton is brilliant - a worthy Wogan successor.;)

happiness said...

This has to be one of the worst Eurovisions I've ever seen and I've seen quite a few. The white costumes, the interchangeable songs, the total lack of humour, the sick-making Russian arresting of the gay protest. As for Graham Norton - he is one of my very favourite comedians and he has been utterly, utterly terrible. I don't care if we win or if Terry Wogan upset the Europeans, at least he understood just what a travesty this so-called contest is. The UK song, by the way, is truly awful.

Anonymous said...

And they'll be dancing in the streets of Olso tonight (well, probably not). We've never picked the winner yet though and there is still time.

Martin Curtis said...

Told you - Norway - folk song. Pick the trend - not the same old tripe.

alestorm would win:

Graham is playing a blinder - much better than Wogan.

Fingers crossed we end up in top 5.

Anonymous said...

Gordon really should not have used Anti terrorism laws on Iceland.

Anonymous said...

I really surprised at how well Graham Norton is doing. I thought it just wouldn't be the same without Wogan. But he's holding his own nicely. Very funny comments.

Your have let down your posters by admitting you idle your time away watching Euro centric rubbish. SHAME ON YOU. Open an other bottle of BLUE NUN and watch the MAN who should be leading the the CONS on ANDREW NEILL'S Face to Face on Browns Broadcasting Corporation.(Circa 10.30p) Try BBC I,player they may even allow it to be reviewed.

I cannot stand Norton but he has done a good job.

(I am watching this in our house under protest). My vote went to Dita Von Teese.

Shouldn't they ban voting for countries which share a border.

Well done plucky Norway.

Alan Douglas said...

Iain, how you can use "Eurovision Song Contest" and "live" in the same breath defeats me.

The only reason for ever watching it was Terry Wogan. Because you were blogging it I switched over.

For about 20 secs. That show has not been worth watching since Cliff was our boy. (And A boy)

I went to Berlin/Simon Rattle/Carmina Burana instead - brilliant !

HELP FOR HEROES - BAND OF BROTHERS BIKE RIDE

In a week's time, 300 of us will set off from Portsmouth to cycle through the Normandy battlefields, and into Paris, to commemorate the Allies’ liberation of Europe 65 years ago. With us will be teams from our Allies of today, wounded servicemen from America, Canada and France as well as our own from Headley Court.

The ride will be a challenge, France is not flat, for some (me) it will be life changing but for all it will certainly be one of the most worthwhile things we have ever done.

I will ride alongside brave men and women whose lives have also changed forever through their injuries and I will have the satisfaction of knowing that you (with your donations) and I (with a sore backside and very tired legs) will be helping to raise money for them and hundreds like them.

If anyone would like to make a contribution to the fundraising, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/bandofbrothers-aspinall where you can donate online.

If you'd like more info about the ride, or Help for Heroes, please visit http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/bobbr_itinerary.html

Thanks
Mark

Rumania entry quite catchy was it? No doubt that will make us more ready to accept the two million destitute and, for the most part, illiterate immigrants soon to reach our shores from that country thanks to the"Eurovision Judges" in Westminster,Brussels and Strasbourg. There are better things to do than watch such trash for hours on end and MPs with any conscience would be focusing whatever talents they may possess on putting "their House" back in order and making it, once more, a House that serves the people of this country.

Thank you for your valour Iain in sitting through the whole thing to tell us about it thus saving us having to watch it.
