John Reid has just stuck the knife well and truly between Jacqui Smith's shoulderblades. In the Commons he said if he had been Home Secretary he would have expected to have been told about the arrest of Damian Green, and would not have been as placid about it as she has been.

Buckle up Jacqui it's going to be a bumpy ride.
It is apparant to me that the Speakers announcement of an enquiry by respected MP's and the announcement this morning by HarmEveryone was a Labour fix, arranged by her at that 'secret' meeting.
It is just another example that this Labour Government of all the talentless will do anything to suppress the people learning the truth!
Couldn't happen to a nicer hatchet-faced old bitch.
If she'd substituted the word "properly" for "calmly", it might have been nearer the mark.

He's taking the right decisions though for the long term good and getting on with the job. I hope he gets that message across.

Is she dealing with it then? The last week or so she has just come across as a miserable old cow with a thick head. Gone is the sumptous cleavage and all we are left with is that is that goddam-awful, be-spectacaled, puddin' bowl haircut.
How sad it is though to see the ever faithful government backbenchers show how "Brown" their noses have become,clearly just trying to protect the Home Secretary and PM rather than do and say what is best for Parliament.

On the Green affair: It would be wrong for to prejudge the outome of an indpt police enquiry. So don't ask me about that again.

Skids, I wouldn't get your hopes up. As Mark says, he'll just troll out his usual lines to any challenging questions; not that the BBC will actually let any tough ones get through, that is. They will no doubt be variants of "Why is Britain so well placed to deal with this global economic crisis?"
When my kids had done something naughty and I got them together for an inquisition, the first reaction from them was to blame each other. "He did it!" "No, She did it". "He made me do it" etc.
(You can see where this is going can't you?)
This reaction, though quite normal in naughty children, is very revealing in this situation. Firstly it reveals that guilt and culpability is a given. Secondly it reveals there is little or no loyalty among rats on a sinking ship, and thirdly a speculative, but intriguing possibility, that there are further revelations, damaging to the Government, and everyone is trying to get away from everyone else. So, you have Mick and Jill, Jacqui and John, Harriet and Mick, et al, all running for the high ground.
It's a demonstration of guilt and guilty intent. I wonder what further revelations there will be?
Iain, memorable moments during this morning's statement by Jaqui Smith - Damian Green standing up to make a point of order, to draw to the attention of the Speaker that the Home Secretary had read out in her statement, the incorrect charge under which he was arrested. He then read the correct charge from his arrest warrant which he had with him. He asked that the incorrect wording be withdrawn from the record. Her reply was a feeble answer that she was quoting from something she had seen, ? a letter, from the police on November 28th. Someone else stood up and said shortly after, how can one believe any of what she says.
Her gratuitous rudeness to Douglas Hogg QC who asked a pertinent question about when did she discover the illegality of the police search in the HoC, she told him that he was confusing his role as a Member of Parliment with that of "what he would dearly like to be" a member of the judiciary. And finally her wittering and complete failure to answer the question when Dominic Grieve asked her about
the police's failure to obtain a warrant to conduct a search in the HoC.
She came across and hopeless and arrogant.

Looks like the Serjeant-at-Arms told the police she would take legal advice before she gave consent, so the Speaker's comments about not being informed by the police sound like pure spin from the Speaker.

Jacqui does not understand the difference between placid and calm.
Placid implies passivity, calmness implies outward demonstration of control and emotional restraint.
Some of the most powerful expressions of anger and force are possible when the person is calm.
Reid might feel that Jaiquequacky Smith is a lightweight, and if he does he is right. She reeks of some over-promoted provincial deputy HR manager. All spite, denial and pomposity.
