Bi-Annual Readers' Survey

Click here to take the Iain Dale's Diary reader survey

In June I carried out a readers' survey about current politics, your views on this blog and the media in general. Six months on, I thought it would be interesting to see how some of your attitudes have changed. It will take 5-10 minutes to complete.

* Rate world leaders
* Who will you vote for?
* Which media websites do you visit?
* Which blogs do you visit?
* Would you subscribe to my new magazine?

Are you going to put up the results? :)

Iain Dale said...

Indeed so.

Semi-annual, my dear chap. If it were bi-annual, we'd only have to put up with this every other year.

Dear Pedant, I did take the trouble to check that Biannual is the right word - as opposed to Biennial. Mind you, semi annual means the same I suppose!

Oh dear, you're right - it can mean that too. What a lovely word. See the dual definition in wiktionary.

What a useless pedant I am... :-(

Iain's become addicted to his new bed and has been dozing in it all day and hasn't changed the Comments at all. I don't believe that no one has added a comment on the subjects below.

He just woke up long enough to put this thread up and he'll be toddling off to Nod again within the hour.

The heck? Cranmer wasn't on the list of blogs read. Why is this?

I didn't take the survey the first time around - but look forward to the results!

btw, what magazine do you speak of?

There was nowhere for me to mark the country I live in. You had Canada and the US and then an 1,100 mile void down to Central America. How could you miss out a huge country like this that has deserts and jungles and the Sierra Madre and goes from the Gulf of Mexico across the continent to the Pacific Ocean and has 100m people?

Why not just put 'North America' to include all three countries?

Anyway, as there was nowhere to click, and as it wouldn't let me go on to the next question without the obeissance of a click, I just clicked on the list at random.

I can't help feeling it's against our human rights to be left out like this, though.

Rightside - the new magazine he has been touting about like a tart for the past week.

Gosh, this thread is so lively my head is spinning!

It started off at 8:35 p.m. British time and has inched forward to seven contributors in all the intervening hours.

The whole blog's going this way.

Can hetro/homosexual readers take part too; or is it just for those that want to have their cake *and* eat it?

Not sure I can see the appeall of the monthly idea. people like you because you are gossipy and up to the minute. A mnnthly needs sustained arguement and a feeling that it is an event .

Propsect is good

I think with all her contributions to your blog comments, today's should be known as 'Verity's' Love reading all her comments.

You don't think that people have given up posting comments because they're sick of you attacking everyone who doesn't share your extreme view of the world, do you?

At least we had 'south' in the UK areas. These days we are lumped in with the South East for some unknown reason. An area with which we have little in common.

(Independence for Wessex!)

verity, i have no idea who you are, and couldn't care less, but why don't you get your own blog and see who comes along?

in fact, that's a good idea for anyone who posts more than three times a day on someone else's blog. you clearly have so much to say, get a blog and do it yourself!

Anonymous said...

Iain, can we have a feature that indexes comments by contributor. Than I can just click on verity's name and get straight to the nub of the issue.

Is it just me who thinks that the new, short 8pm BBC news (from tonight) is too short and will likely lead to further unbalanced (even if not deliberate!) distortions in political stories?

Don`t worry about the midges Verity. You are appreciated. I suggest "anonymity" goes the Noddy blog where the challenge is to agree in as banal a way as possible on the subject furthest away from controversy.

ANON "It’s a nice day"
ANON "I so agree"
( Blog administrator )"hallo gate post"

11:20 You're about the hundred thousandth person to suggest I get a blog. If I had any interest, I would have had one four or five years ago. It takes anywhere from 30 seconds to three minutes to dash off a comment. That's all the time I've got.

Can you understand the math?

I happen to like Iain's blog, find it entertaining and lively and, with a few exceptions, like the quality of blogger he attracts.

Bored by Verity - Well, you can spell my name, so when you see it, skip over my comment.

The blog has slowed down because of comment moderation and Iain's involvement in so many other things, not, by any means, because people have stopped commenting.

You are probably the only reader of this blog living in Mexico. You could always enter your last place of abode.

So what's the point of a political blog? Is it just a sounding board for your own particular political bent? Does it make you feel good to let off steam? The current Government seems completely impervious to criticism in whatever form or forum and is also happy to break the law. Does your reporting of these unhappy events and the resultat pithy commentary actually do any good? Is there any conclusive evidence that it does? If not what's the point?

4:02 - I don't think so. Of course, most expats here are Americans and Canadians, but there are a surprising number of Brits in the old colonial state capitals. I know there are other people who blog, although don't know whether they visit this site.

Yes, I could have entered my last country of residence, but that would have had no more value than the random choice I made because the point was to get accurate information and build a profile of the blogreader.

This is quite a large, rich country to leave off the map.

4:18 - Good question. This government breaks the law on a daily basis and cares nothing for our predictable opinions because we're not their constituency anyway.

Verity - are you in Panama? Have you tried canoeing?

7 out of 25 posts here are by Verity.

Does this tell you something?

Am I the only reader from the Isle of Man? That was missing too.

what's the annual income question designed to show - well over 90% of the population will be ticking the bottom two boxes?

Anonymous said...

Manx Man - Gib was missing too so I had to choose the Western Europe option.

I'm sure Iain will refine the questions and options over time, but maybe he doesn't realise how globally read this blog is!

Anonymous - Snap! And seven are from you!!

I am not all over every thread. But you are.

When I read that a survey or other will take "less than 5 minutes", this is invariably a sign that it will 15-20 minutes and I therefore ignore it. When i am propositioned on the phone to undertake such a survey, I inform the interviewer that he/she has precisely 5 minutes and no more. Should he/she choose to proceed, I warn him/her 30 seconds before the appointed time and precisely at the expiry of the 5 minutes, I say "Good Day" and hang up - they never call me back for a further interview. Sometimes, I ask whether they intend to pay me for my time - of course the answer is invariably "No", whereupon I suggest that this seems unfair since doubtless they are being paid for conducting the interview. This approach also tends to bring matters to an early conclusion.
