Michael Meacher on GMTV on Sunday
GMTV will be showing an interview with Michael Meacher on their Sunday morning programme. Nothing remarkable in that you might think - indeed you'd probably be thinking to yourself 'is that the best they can do?' However, it does sound quite interesting if what I hear is true. Meacher says he wouldn't be a stalking horse to force Blair out but says the centre left should field a candidate and that it shouldn’t be a coronation for Brown. But the most revelaing this he says is that Blair never spoke to him about nuclear power during the whole of his seven year tenure as Environment Minister.

Hmmm he’s doing the rounds at the mo isn’t he? I wonder if people are putting into place a leadership challenge?
Meacher was (inadvertantly) far more entertaining when he was Benn's Vicar on Earth.
Meacher's replacement(?), now sacked himself, Elliott Morley is also speaking out on Bliar's nuclear perspective - this time over lack of Defra input to the decision making.
The Matt cartoon in Wednesday's Telegraph is quite pointed. Perhaps Bliar is eager to leave another legacy of his time in office... i.e. a long-lived nuclear waste one
I think it may have been the Sunday Times that reported at the time, without complaint from Downing St., that the description of nuclear as an "unattractive option" was inserted in his last commissiion's report at the insistence of Blair.
The fact that, for years, Meacher got an environmental job despite repeatedly saying things which would be clinically insane in any other context also suggests that Blair's pro-science, pro-nuclear position is of very recent origin. This is a situation where Labour & Tories are switching positions (the LDs having been consistent & wrong all along).
If Blair is going to go nuclear, why have we (UK) just sold our only expertise in designing nuclear reactors, i.e. Westinghouse Nuclear?
Though probably makes perfect sense in Blairland...
Did Blair talk to Meacher about anything? Can't think why.
