Every Little Bit Helps ...

It doesn't happen often, but whenever it does I feel vaguely embarrassed. I just popped down to the local Tesco to stock up on grapefruits (nothing like freshly squeezed grapefruit juice...) and I was just putting the trolley away when I could tell that a guy walking towards me was about to speak to me.

HIM: You're that guy off Sky, aren't you?
ME: Well, I do appear on it from time to time, yes.
HIM: I thought it was you in Tesco, but you look a lot younger than you do on TV.
ME: Er, thanks. I think.
Perhaps he thought I was Adam Boulton... :)

    Iain, I am disappointed... Tescos!

    I wouldhave expected Waitrose, maybe M&S or Sainsburys; not Tesco.

    Oh, the perils and pains of being a star, darling! You must bear it bravely, though, for the sake of your public. You owe them so much.

    4:29 - Waitrose is overpriced. Sainsbury's is owned by a Labour peer who donates money to Labour. Never my money. I don't think M&S is that great.

    Sorry, to disillusion you, Mr Dale, but I was the man in question who spoke to you at Tesco and I didn't think you were Adam Boulton. I mistakenly thought you were Michael Portillo.

    However, I realised you couldn't be Mr Portillo for two reasons.

    Firstly, you had a Vote Conservative car sticker.

    Secondly, when I spoke to you, you didn't ignore me and bury your nose in a book.

    I was once in the same building as Mark Fisher, Labour MP for Stoke Central. Though I didn't get a chance to see him and tell him what an utter bell he is.

    It probably happens much more often in people's heads. I saw Neil Kinnock stomping around my campus as if he were royalty last week and was sorely tempted to yell "well all right!" at him (a la Sheffield), but it was only when I later read in the local newspaper that he was in the area that I was sure it was him. (And I deeply regret not taking that opportunity)

    Incidentally he looks even balder in real life.

    Tesco's used to be somewhere to be avoided except in extreme emergencies. However, it has come on enormously in recent years and I would rate it as better than Sainsbury's though not yet as good as Waitrose.

    Verity, I would have thought that your main reason for avoiding Waitrose is that it is a workers' co-operative.

    10:11 - Well, no. The foreign supermarket market is pretty much cornered by Wal-Mart and Costco.

    But, see, when I was living in England, I chose not to shop at Sainsbury's because it is owned by a Labour peer who gives money to the socialists. He never got a penny of my money.

    I hope this is clear. I don't know what confused you about this sentence in my previous post.

    Have you checked that grapefruit juice is safe to drink with the specific statin that you're taking? There can be dangerous effects with some types.
