Telegraph Column: Cameron's Three Tests for 2008

Click HERE for my latest Telegraph column, which assesses three challenges facing Tory leader David Cameron in 2008. They are...

1. To attract more so-called C2 support
2. To create a government in waiting
3. To get Simon Heffer to say something nice about him

Not sure if the third one is achievable, but you never know!

  1. You quote the Spectator as saying Cameron thinks he has only nine 'Cabinet-worthy' ministers - you list nine, but don't mention George Osborne.

Was that oversight, or is there something we should be told?

  5. Is Osborne not to be offended? I see little sign of appeal or insight from him.

  6. I can help Cameron.

Promise a referendum on the EU.

  7. If Cameron thinks there is dead wood in the Cabinet he needs to reshuffle and sharpish.

  8. Why expect Heffer to say anything nice about a Conservative? The man supports UKIP along with 2% of the voters.

  9. I see you've written off Peter Hitchens then. Yeah me too.

  10. Re No3, he has more chance of winning the lottery two weeks running and then being hit by lightning as he plucks a four leafed clover.

  11. Sorry Iain but the day that Heffer says something nice about Cameron will be the day most of the country turns against him. He is best ignored.

The first aim just seems like you are saying that Cameron will do well if he agrees with everything you stand for... I'm not sure that's correct. He has to appeal to the 'ordinary man and woman' yes, whether your C2 voters are those I am not sure.

The second aim is key and I think we are getting there!
