Labour MP Scents West Ham Votes

Mike Gapes, Labour MP for Ilford has put down this Early Day Motion...
That this House welcomes the decision of the Premier League arbitration panel to reject the challenge by Sheffield United and Fulham to the decision to fine West Ham United rather than deduct points; notes their view that this decision was not irrational or perverse; congratulates the players of West Ham United on their magnificent great escape by winning seven of their last nine matches to end the season with 41 points; notes that Sheffield United were relegated because they lost at home to Wigan in their last match and as a result only had 38 points; welcomes the fact that matters of survival and relegation were decided on the field of play and not in the law courts; and wishes West Ham United a successful Premiership season and Sheffield United a successful Championship season in 2007-08.

Naturally, as you would expect, I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments, but do we really need, as taxpayers to spend £300 on the printing of this rubbish in the Order Paper? Should I ever become an MP, would someone please shoot me if I resort to this sort of thing?

Note: As you can imagine, it was all I could do yesterday to avoid writing about West Ham. Thanks to Mike Gapes for giving me the excuse today!

  2. Yes but as Gapes ought to know, being their MP, despite West Ham being their most local team, more Ilford based footie supporters are Arsenal or Spurs fans than Hammers ones. I should know, I grew up there.

  3. MPs should be allowed to put down EDMs only if they pay a non-returnable fee of £300.

  4. You could use the same argument for asking some parliamentary questions

  5. Iain - a genuine question.
How do you know it costs £300 to print this on the order paper?

  6. Iain, I think we would have indulged you ...

After all, it IS much more important that life and death.

  8. Handy having Trevor Brooking so prominent in the FA, isn't it?

  9. I have commented before that this is the biggest outrage ever perpetrated by the no name, lily livered, corporate twats that run the "premier" league.

west ham were guilty and should have had points deducted - the "premier" league bottled it.

I detect the work of Trevor Brooking here.

    Utter, utter farce and scam.

I have no great interest in club football as it is all about money and cheating.

  12. This is only a reply to the Sheffield Mps who had an EDM suggesting Sheffield United escape relegation. EDMs cover allsorts wortthy causes and some not quite so worthy but it is a little unfair to pick on Mike Gapes when lots of other MPs do the same for their own pet causes

  13. Mog said.. You could be correct on this for most of the football fraternity. But in the case of gods chosen club( his colours, White, claret & blue) your are incorrect. West ham united FC are the epicenter of the wonderful game, and do not bleat like lesser clubs.i.e Man u maggies, asenal etc.

  14. "Should I ever become an MP" - probably no is the best advice. Anyway they're after younger blood these days aren't they?

  15. I don't agree with you Iain; the EDMs can be superficial, and this is one - but they do act as an important test and filter of opinions in the House of Commons.

  18. Football. Outrageous to even mention it on here when you have a West Ham blog for all the deviants who like that sort of thing.

  19. That £300 figure is so bogus. Those sums are just invented by the Government as a way of trying to embarrass MPs who are active.

Democracy and parliaments are expensive, but money isn't everything.

  20. From the Oxford English dictionary:

gape: to stare at with open mouth, to gaze upon in curiosity or wonder.

So Mike Gapes is living up to his name.

  21. Gapes has to do cheap stunts like this because he's under threat from the LibDems in Ilford South.

Don't know what Rosindell's excuse in Romford is, though.
