We hear a lot about how the Conservatives have no seats in many Councils, yet the fact of the matter is that many councils (my suspicion is more) have no Labour or LibDem councils. I want to compile a list to get a true reflection of "no-go" areas for the three parties. So in the comments, can you tell me any councils who have no councillors from one party or another? Or point me to anywhere else where this info has been compiled.
Wandsworth - no yellow peril here!
ReplyDeleteMalvern Hills District Council has not had a Labour councillor for several years.
ReplyDeleteHi Iain.
ReplyDeleteTry this list for starters - seems to cover most of them.

Oxford has five parties represented - none of them Tories, tho... Last Tory cllr to serve their term was voted out in 1996! (Thought you'd like to know.)
ReplyDeleteTest Valley in Hampshire has no Labour Councillors
ReplyDeleteWinchester has only 3 out of around 60.
"...many councils (my suspicion is more) have no Labour or LibDem councils."
ReplyDeleteI think you mean 'councillors' for the second mention of 'councils', Iain?
Hiya
ReplyDeleteQuick and dirty analysis shows this list based on the data source I posted earlier.

Pretty certain both Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District don't have any Labour councillors, and haven't had for many years.
ReplyDeleteBroxbourne three non-Tory councillors: 35 Conservative, 2 Labour and 1 British National Party, but they are saved from the worst of the lot - no Liberal Democrats in Broxbourne.
ReplyDeleteNo Lib Dems in Breckland and Great Yarmouth. No Labout in North Norfolk, Broadland and South Norfolk.
ReplyDeleteYou probably already knew that.
Pretty certain both Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District don't have any Labour councillors, and haven't had for many years.
ReplyDeleteMany years really doesn't justify the time I think. If those two Councils, along with Aylesbury Vale, ever retruned a Labour politicians you'd know that we were in End Times.
No labour councillors in Shepway District Council, Kent
ReplyDeleteNo Tories in Islington for a very long time. I was watching this discussion 18ds last night and I am certain that I heard Mr. dale say the only good thing about ( boring ) Kerron Cross was that " ...He hates the Lib Dems 'even' more than I do... "
ReplyDelete....and yet many seem to turn up here where they are apparently most unwelcome? I won’t miss them.
OR DID I MIS-HEAR?
Iain,
ReplyDeleteTry the Local Government Association.
I have done a quick search and thrown up the "census of local authority councillors"
http://www.lga.gov.uk/Briefing.asp?lsection=761&id=SX8271-A780C6D3&ccat=120
I have not had time to read it properly but there are bits about party representation, though possibly not exactly what you're looking for.
I'm sure the LGA elsewhere has all this info, though.
Thanks
The last Liberal was elected to Westminster City Council (and predecessors, Westminster, Paddington and St Marylebone) in 1919. Since then we have remained entirely free of the yellow peril. The SDP never won anything either (although they did get one councillor for six months through defection).
ReplyDelete'Oxford has five parties represented - none of them Tories'
ReplyDeletePerhaps the Tories are pleased they are not part of a Council which is 'wallowing in deferred failure' ;)
Interesting that despite all the stuff about the Tory Party's alleged lack of reach into large parts of the country, it is the Labour Party which has by far the longer list of places where it doesn't figure.

ReplyDeleteBelfast?
ReplyDeleteCan confirm Waverley has no Labour councillors.
ReplyDeleteWhat is more about Malvern Hills is that in 2003 and 2005 County Council elections there was not a single Labour candidate. Do not know whether there are any in 2007 because the council in its usual inefficiency has not yet published the list of candidates on the website. However I understand at least 5 Tories have been returned unopposed.
