Where are Beckett, Howells and Hoon?
Tune into BBC Parliament at 3.30pm for an Urgent Question from William Hague on Iraq. But wait a minute, who's he up against? Ma Beckett? Hoon? Or even Kim Howells? Nope. Answering for the Government will be the Trade Minister Ian McCartney. This is all very strange. I shall be setting my elite team of researchers onto it immediately and report back later. The question we all want to know the answer to is this: Where's Margaret Beckett?

it's amazing enough to actually have a sighting of hague. shadow fco, at the time of an illegal, stupid war, adn he's virtually invisible.
Could it be the build up to Tony's resignation ahead of Yates sumbitting his evidence to the CPS in the New Year.
Anonymous 2:27. I have asked other people to explain what they mean by calling the war in Iraq "illegal". It was passed by the British Parliament, perhaps wrongly - we don't know yet - and it was declared perfectly legally in the United States.
Are you and your ilk under the impression that the UN is somehow a supranational legislating body? Several sovereign nations went to war in Iraq, having observed the legal formalities applicable in their countries to do so.
You have to understand that there is no such thing as "international law". It is chimera. There are treaties, and treaties can be broken when it no longer suits one of the parties.

verity - the legal advice from Lord Goldsmith was that the war in Iraq would only be legal if the UN were fully involved in the reconstruction.
They weren't - it isn't, end of story.
Or perhaps you would like to return to the state of play during the Second World War ?

I would point out that it's actually Des Browne who is answering Hague's question - probably a better choice than Ian McCartney.

The UN has absolutely no powers over anything. It's all illusionary pie in the sky. Do you really think Britain is subject to the approval of the dictators, thugs and drugs and arms traders who populate the UN?
The UN has no authority because it is not democratically elected by a single electorate of a democratic country. Kofi has no more authority than the third world thugs and gangsters he hangs out with.

DumbBlondVerity it is British law under which the Iraq invasion and assasination/Massacre prelude was authorised by Blair, with Tory consent - and it was this decision, based upon deliberate lies which was illegal.
Or at least the Government's legal team thought so.

There is no higher authority. There is no great debating chamber in the sky where people called Og and Zena and other people dressed in Mylar legislate for the planet. There is no such thing as "international law".
The UN has no democratic mandate, thus it is utterly unimportant. It is a chimera. An illusion.
The war was legally entered in to. Whether the decision was wise or not is a different debate. But it is legal.
PS - It is wise not to make sexist comments because women will always beat you at that game.
