Lord Lambton, a former Conservative defence minister who resigned after he was photographed smoking cannabis in bed with two prostitutes, has died at the age of 84. Anthony Lambton was one of two ministers who resigned from Ted Heath's government as a result of sex scandals involving prostitutes. The other was the Leader of the House of Lords Lord Jellicoe. He was forced to resign after pictures of him in bed with the call girls were published in the News of the World. Following an investigation by the security services, he was denied access to secret material because of fears that he was vulnerable to blackmail.In an interview with Sir Robin Day after he was exposed he was was asked why he used call girls. He said: "I think that people sometimes like variety. I think it's as simple as that and I think that impulse is probably understood by almost everybody. Don't you?"
After his resignation Lambton moved to Italy where he has lived ever since. He was married to Belinda Blew Jones, who died three years ago. They are survived by five children.

What on earth is wrong with smoking cannabis and being in bed with two prostitutes? It sound like a good way to go too me. I wonder if Dave is having a snorting good laugh at how times change and people's attitudes also change.

Understand that I'm simply talking about the objective position and saying nothing at all about how Lambton as an individual stood at the time of his death. In the nature of things, I don't know and can't know, about that. But the death of a human being deserves (if I may say so)a tad more respect than is shown by some of the flippant and cynical comments on this blog. Maybe it's the hangovers from last night.
Hopefully he won't get a Telegraph Obit as strangely suggestive as that for his wife............see last paragraph

When one reads the Obit of his wife three years ago, for which there is a link higher up in these comments, the fact that she had crippled herself might go some way towards explaining his extracurricular activities. I can't really condone the drugs though, personally - that was a bad example as there are others to whom the "example" might have done harm (although seemingly not to him).
It's endearing that in another age a Govt Minister should have written a personal cheque to a prostitute and presumably not thought it risky!!
