Labour MP Calls for Tessa Jowell to go

Peter Kilfoyle has just said on Radio 5 Live that Tessa Jowell should resign. He said she should stand aside until her husband's affairs have been sorted out. He said the whole episode left "a nasty taste in the mouth". This is now getting serious. It is astonishing that a fellow Labour MP should go public like this.

  1. He was saying the same thing on the daily Politics show today.

  2. Astonishing you say? Not if it's Kilfoyle it isn't. He's been gunning for Blair and Co ever since they failed to give him the Chief Whip's job in the 1998 reshuffle. He reckoned he was owed one by Blair for sorting Militant out in the 1980s and for being the first MP to sign his nomination papers in '94.

  3. Does Peter Kilfoyle qualify as a "fellow Labour MP" - when was the last time that he did anything supportive of the Government? I like him immensely but he's a rent-a-quote.

  4. "rent-a-quote"? No he isn't. There may be personal animus in there but Kilfoyle accurately reflects the views of many of his (Kinnockite) colleagues. It is just that he is prepared to say it.

  6. Of course, Tessa should go. Preferably as an MP aswell - I know that some people Members in Dulwich & West Norwood tried unsuccessfully to deselect her last time round. A vote calling for an open contest was proposing in at least 2 wards and by one of the affiliated trade unions. Sadly it was unsuccessful because the Party Officers in the constituency work full-time for Tessa so they ensure that nothing vaguely democratic happens in the constituency!

  7. Not very astonishing....you could get Clare Short asking for the resignation of St Tony and all his crew everyday (when you don't hear, it's just because she wasn't able to find a journalist to express all her feelings!)

  8. Of course, she should resign and as an MP aswell. She won't move to Dulwich despite being an MP there for a number of years and she is unpopular with some people in her local Labour Party. That's why some of them tried to trigger her last time she was up for selection. Maybe next time they will have more success.

  9. Ian Gibson is voicing doubts too: “I cannot believe she did not know what was going on,” (source: The Times)

  10. She suggests in her statement that she didn't know the loan had been repaid! So when she signed the next set of loan applications shouldn't she have considered she might have been committing an offence?

After all, no doubt her husband had already stated on the form there were no outstanding loans on the property - that being the truth. However as she allegedly didn't know that she apparently knowingly put her name to an untruth. Wouldn't she have mentioned - no doubt in passing over the marmalade - to her husband that she wasn't too happy about this course of action, and wasn't it all a bit dodgy?

Haven't we read umpteen times in the newspapers what a devoted couple they are? Glad to hear that for their sake, but it makes all the rest of this tale stretch one's gullibility to breaking point.
