The Imminent Take-off of Video Blogging

Video blogging is going to be big. Soon. It won't just be bloggers posting videos of themselves on TV like I've just done above. It won't even be films made by bloggers wearing their pajamas in their bedrooms. At least I hope it won't be. It'll be videos that sometimes make or break the news. With the advent of things like Blip and Mogulus, video blogging is about to take off. One of the big decisions I have to make is how to utilise this new facility on my blog. Ideas anyone?

hire a hot actress to read out your blog on video. boingboing.net do that. totally works.

Shouldn't that read 'posting videos of themselves on TV as I've just done'?

a multi-media platform would be great... maybe a viewer rating system would be a good idea - and tags help.

Morning Iain
Never publish these new ideas so early, you know Gordon "from the manse" will be out plundering and by light of dawn this idea shall be part of the Labour Manifesto.
Cameron came good yesterday on Immigration, my gripe is no one but no one knows exactly the amount of Immigrants we have..try the NHS ? I wager they all have an NHS number and as most make no attempt to learn English then there is a huge demand for interpreters'so the demand on the NHS budget is even further stretched
Good on you David Cameron at last someone is on the right track. We have been too soft for too long

Its not I disagree but video blogging isn't what I would like.

Over the last 6 months I have come to like blogs as I can check several sites and get a good insight on todays news in just a couple of minutes... I skim read a lot of it and the thought of having to watch websites/blogs instead doesn't appeal.

Hyperbole alert.

The medium IS NOT the message.

The message is the message.

And you won't be competing with the BBC just yet..

Different concept altogeter. Video blogs are eye candy, and production values on that are higher on TV. Blogs are about concentrated communication of ideas. The written word continues to be the most compact tool for that purpose.

Keep video posts short and sweet and give a good clear description of the content so I don't waste time waiting for the player to kick off and then discover I'm not interested in the subject. If people do that once or twice, chances are they won't bother again.

I tend to agree with Lucy. I don't mind spending 5-10 mins scaning the blogs but I haven't time to sit looking at videos.

For those who work in an office it could be a bit difficult if the boss hears a video blog!

Attempts to connect to Chicken Yoghurt right now produce the message "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. Please try later."

Maybe he has a particularly good video there this morning.

I go with Lucy and Nicholas Bennet, and probably others.

I find videos tedious. I can get through vast amounts of text and usually can digest a lot of it too. Not so with videos, where you get the coughs, the splutters, the diversions, the dead ends, the bickering, etc and outrageous ties.

A good writer will set out their stall early on so that you can make sense and put it in context. This tends not to happen with video - it's a very non-linear message trapped in an ultra-linear medium.

No. Forget it.

Careful, you might eat 18DS's lunch, or at least the pickle.

Words are often not enough. Emotion can be conveyed via video, as can animation of graphics+text+voice at the same time. Images are often the best way to convey ideas.

My suggestion would be to actually put the effort into making reports of about 3-5 minutes a piece that expose something, highlight something. Think Michael Crick of the blogosphere rather than Max Headroom, which would not suit your blog's editorial focus. You'd be quite good at putting together a report every now and again, like the report you did about the Sith Institute for 18 Doughty Street. Think more like that, but not worry about putting one out every week - just whenever the issue feels right. You'd also have to think about editing time, which can be greatly reduced if you have a hard-drive camera and shoot-to-edit. The effort put into a report like this will pay off and you're one of few people that can actually make it work. The key is not to saturate the audience with loads of crap quality reports, just really good ones every now and again, which would give it more likelihood of actually being picked up by the mainstream media.

PS: If you got a Mac then editing would become a breeze and I am sure that somebody would be willing to give you a tutorial.
