Guess Who I'm Seeing Tonight?
No LBC tonight. Ages ago I had booked to see Cliff Richard at the Albert Hall so I am leaving my programme in the more than capable hands of Mehdi Hasan.
Grant, bless him, had only ever heard two Cliff songs, so I have just introduced him to the delights of Miss You Nights. He's now sobbing his eyes out.
Truly, though, it is my favourite song of all time.
Have been around almost as long as Cliff. Apart from a few very early songs - Move It; Living Doll etc - am not a fan. But he has done well to last so long so all credit. What is it about people like him, Jim Reeves, Daniel O'Donnell et al who basically sing slush that makes them so popular?
Ah yes, Iain, you have a show on LBC, and many years ago, so did I, but you didn't go to Cliff's party at the Dorchester or interview him during it, did you? And yes, for a big star, he really is one of the nicest people you could meet.
And here was me thinking we had a few things in common - similar age, similar medical condition, both emminent bloggers with a huge readership(!) and I even have my own Dock Labour Scheme-style hobby horse.
But for Cliff's sake (as Rick [Rik Mayall] used to say in the Young Ones - he presumably considered Cliff superior to Jesus Christ!), what's this all about?!
During my teen years I was into the Clash, the Damned, the Buzzcocks et al, and Cliff was my bete noire. Or one of them.
I well recall Ciff talking about his new album on TV. This depicted him as a boxer, and he said it was supposed to represent how he had triumphed over things he disliked, such as punk, and this really annoyed me at the time, and I still recall it thirty years or so later.
Mind you, I was flirting with the hard left at the time, so maybe it's a politics thing!
Sad, very sad...
ReplyDeleteCliff Richard? Next you will be telling us you is a gayer.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Would still appreciate an explanation for your censorship of my first comment yesterday re. the smoking ban.

ReplyDeleteOh dear, I see the first Cliffophobic comments have been posted already.
Iain, what was it that made you out yourself?
Truly a brave thing to do.
Is Cliff still involved with Brumburgers?

Or even sexuality-related!!
One of the best shows I ever saw was Cliff Richard at the Royal Albert hall over thirty years ago.
ReplyDeleteMiss you nights... I always thought it was Mission Lights!!
Agreed, Sir Cliff is enough to make you cry... if not entirely in the way you meant...!
ReplyDeleteCliff is one of my favourite singers - enjoy!
