It seems to have been overlooked by the press that Gordon Brown was confused in the conversation between deficit and debt. He actually told Mrs Duffy that he would half the debt within 4 years. This from "the best chancellor that we have had in the 20th century".
having insulted a widowed pensioner who has been a life long labour supporter, worked with disadvantaged children and was intending to vote labour, and then rush back to 'apologise' and then set the 'attack dogs' on her,and then realise that trying to spin some story about a pr company and £50k from the sun was just going to alienate even more voters well, to quote lord healey, 'when in a hole stop digging'
Am I playing catch-up here? I think that when Mrs Duffy asked, "where are the flocking from?", Brown thought she said, "where are they fucking from!". Hardly a word Mrs Duffy would, by what else we've seen of her, but it seems Brown isn't very good at judging people so perhaps bases what he thinks they might say on what he's thinking.
Anyway, listening to the conversation, and if I'm being charitable, I can see how the 'flocking' could have been misheard. By someone who is exhausted, under huge pressure and in what is for him a very uncomfortable position.
As an aside, someone wanting to be elected Prime Minister shouldn't display any of those negatives.
This is a superb piece of art. Love it !

La Toynbee once described this buffoon as an `Intellectual Collossus`......Wonder if she might like to revise that in light of recent events...
ReplyDeleteThe Duffy Effect will be studied by experts for years to come.
ReplyDeleteJust blogged about this. Noone seems to mind when voters say terrible, and unsubstantiated, things about politicians.
