Fundraising is a vital part of any political campaign. Most Conservative Associations have a major fundraiser which they rely on to fund at least part of their election campaign. Tonight, Dartford Conservatives were due to hear from Theresa May at their Annual Dinner, but due to the three line whip on the AV system she had to pull out. Imagine you are the organiser of the dinner and know that because of the whip you can't get an MP as a replacement. Panic stations. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I'm going to step into Theresa's shoes tonight (cue the jokes) and speak at the event. I hope it raises a pot load of money for Gary Johnson, who is bidding to win the seat back from Labour.
I gather the meal is a chinese one. Not really my sort of thing. I wonder if they do chips with it...
Anyway, if you'd like to help the Dartford fundraising effort, here's how you can do it.
"I gather the meal is a chinese one. Not really my sort of thing. I wonder if they do chips with it..."
ReplyDeleteIs this part of your "diamond geezer" act Iain? Trying to convince the working-class Tory bovver boys who hang around here that you are one of them and not the sort of poncey London metrosexual who knows his way around a thai/chinese/indonesian/japanese menu?
I shall be deploying spies to have you followed of an evening and see what restaurants you check into...
I have never been to a Thai or Indonesian. I went to a Japanese one once.
ReplyDeleteStrictly meat and two veg for me.
CHIPS !!!, what did I tell you about presentation, do you want to become the official tory muffin ?
ReplyDeleteSurprised they still offer that in Tunbridge Wells. I thought it was all Michelin stars and designer escargot sauces around those parts.
ReplyDeleteAll a far cry from Dartford where I lived as a child!
Chips aren't great for your diabetes, Iain...
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, I can recommend Indonesian.
If you are a Liberal supporter DespairingLiberal it's a shame you left Dartford as a child. You could have kept the other one company!
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing you tonight Iain.
"Strictly meat and two veg for me."
ReplyDeleteGlad you said that, just occurred to me yesterday that we had neglected to ask if you were a vegetarian! Phew! Don't worry, I'm sure the restaurant will happily sort out some chips as well
Thanks very much for agreeing to come tonight Iain. Should be a fun evening.
DespairingLiberal, we are quite upmarket and cosmopolitan in Dartford these days don't you know! It's the place to be!
Rich
"Strictly meat and two veg for me."
ReplyDeleteIain, do you think the Daily Mail will rise to such a obvious cast? :) At least you're honest and don't have to follow the herd to seek approval.
Go for the curry and chips
ReplyDeleteOur local Chinese does a truly bonzer Chips 'n Gravy. Got to keep an eye on the monosodium glutamate levels, though.
ReplyDeleteDartford, eh? Last time I went there it was closed.
For once Unsworth, you make me laugh out loud. But chips in a Chinese? erggh.
ReplyDeleteGlad Dartford is coming up a little, it was always a noted hole.
Jeremy, according to Wikipedia, Peter Bucklitsch got 5,036 votes for the Libdems in 2005 in Dartford, so that's not exactly "one" is it. Still, I will accept it does not appear to be classic LibDem stalking territory. Perhaps they got squeezed in what is obviously a very narrow LabourTory marginal.
With the AV Vote, whatif the Government lose the vote on purpose? - Leading therefroe the a vote of confidence - either have the vote and the government win and go into the election, or have the vote and the government lose?
ReplyDeleteIf the government lose the AV vote, then surely that would like to a vote of confidence? - If the Government win that vote and go into an election bouyed by that, but what if they lose the AV the confidence vote is lost or is narrow, less than 100 days before the election. - Could be interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Iain , we were about to panic when Theresa May had to pull out! Still it is right that the Parliamentary Party is trying to stop Gordon Brown's very recent conversion to proportional representation.
ReplyDeleteIt is extremely generous of you to speak at our event at such short notice. You can expect a very warm welcome and hopefully not too many jokes about filling Theresa May's famous shoes!!
Raising money?
ReplyDeleteI see the richest man in India is thinking about buying Liverpool FC.
Nice to see our aid money is being put to such good use.
Along with tens of thousands of working class Tories you should try Thai, Indonesian (and Malysian) food Iain. I recommend Melatis in Great Windmill Street (no commission paid, though all bribes gratefully received).
ReplyDeleteI have never been to a Thai or Indonesian. I went to a Japanese one once.
ReplyDeleteIain, you don't know what you are missing!
I live in Dartford - there is now way Labour wil retain this seat, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed the Chinese food in the end! Thanks for coming.
ReplyDeleteFor Erith and Thamesmead, it was Indian!
