Featherstone for LibDem Leader!

Well, it's an innovative way to announce you want to lead your party, I suppose. This is Lynne Featherstone answering a question in today's Independent...
Would you chair Chris Huhne's campaign if he ran for leader again?
Priscilla Judt, Basingstoke

Mr Clegg is doing a brilliant job as leader – so my chairing talents will not be required for many years. And who says I wouldn't be asking someone to chair my campaign when that day comes?

Go girl! There's absolutely nothing wrong in having political ambition. I wish more politicians were open about what political job they aspire to? In my case, it's a bit boring. I'd like to be Secretary of State for Transport...

  2. Own up.
What you really mean is Secretary of State for Driving Cars Really Fast up the M1.

My preferred job in government would be Lord Protector.

  3. Transport, eh? I always used to tell Paddy that I wanted the Education job in the first Ashdown government, because I wanted to (a) get rid of the dead wood in universities and (b) reform spelling, which would save billions (long-term) of needless waste in teaching kids to read and write a language with such a barmy spelling system (in contrast with the likes of Swedish and Italian). How sad is that compared with transport?

  8. Iain,

Cute as you are, you do realise, don't you, that even if you become minister for transport you aill still not be called "Adonis"?

  9. And what would you do as SoS for Transport - it doesn't often feature on your blog?

(for my sins I am a transport economist!)

  12. So Iain is Transport Minister and we get special "Audi" lanes, police escorts for those on their way to media interviews, suspension of speed limits in the early hours of the morning, and a high-speed rail line from Tunbridge Wells to Kennington and Westminster!

I'd prefer city centre car park levies, public transport contributions from developers of out-of-town retail sites, and a new London super train station for all lines into the capital (perhaps on the site of Caxton House when the DWP is abolished). And the demolition of the LB of Newham to create space for a new airport :-)

  13. I'd like to be Prime Minister, or Chancellor, or Minister of Space (with a bit of real authority) (er actually with a bit of real authority in any of the 3 posts).

  14. A Secretary of State for Transport who is openly contemptuous of public transport, goes everywhere by car and no doubt wouldn't be seen dead on a bus. Now there's an idea!

  15. Paddy, unworthy of you. I travel by train every day and use the 87 bus every day from Charing X to Vauxhall.

    Like to retract?

Happy to do so. But in the past you have been a bit sniffy about rail travel and you do like your wheels - but fair enough. Sorry! I of course have a "Freedom Pass" so it's even more of a no brainer for me.

    See you on the bus!
