Copenhagen Memo: No 94

Memo to Ed Miliband

Ed, today you have been all over the airwaves exhorting us all to cut our carbon footprints and that business must also cut its carbon emissions or face the consequences.

Yet your government has thrown its weight (rightly, in my view) behind a third runway at Heathrow Airport. This will, as I am sure you are aware, increase carbon emissions rather than help cut them

Is this what you mean by 'joined up government'? Should we really take all your warnings of a coming armageddon seriously if your government speaks with forked tongues in this manner?

Just askin'.

  1. The big question is... if C02 does not cause 'global warming' as maintained by a great many reputable scientists, does it then mean Carbon trading (and its derivatives) has become the modern equivalent to 'Window Tax' (The tax was introduced under the Act of Making Good the Deficiency of the Clipped Money in 1696....The tax was not repealed until 1851...The richest families in the kingdoms used this tax to set themselves apart from the merely rich). If the poor must bear the ultimate cost of 'Carbon Tax', and at a time of recession, then it will be rightly compared to the hated 'Window Tax'. It can be further noted that energy companies are asking us all to conserve and use less, and on the other hand energy companies are charging the consumer ever increasing amounts of money for less energy.

  2. Have we had enough of these idiots or not?

    Carbon tax?

    We breathe out bloody carbon.

Why not tax methane when we shit?

    Oh sorry.

They probably will if they don't already.

I might say they are taking the piss, but then yes that too could be taxed at source.

The only decision we can usefully take to please these climate taxation lunatics is either not to be born in the first place, or secondly top ourselves, and make sure we decompose underground.

Make decomposition of corpse underground a condition for reduction in Inheritance Tax.

  3. Its also worth asking Labour if they are pleased by the CO2 that will no longer be produced at Corus's Redcar plant ?

They will say no - of course. But this is what they are doing to the entire coun try with their suicidal carbon trading scheme which will just export our industry and jobs to China, Brazil and India.

There are already far to many people employed by the public sector - if they think more can be they are going to destroy us all. (Which it has to be remembered is the aim of many Marxists and many senior Lab people claim to be ex-Marxists ).

  4. It's "joined up thinking" Labour style.

I hear that Gatwick and/or Stanstead may also be in the market for a new runway.

I hope i get the chance to ask him why he's insulting those who aren't convinced.

  6. That would be pragmatic Government surely?

  7. Everyone knows the runway will never be built as it won't get off the ground before the Tories are in power and cancel it (quite rightly too).

  8. Doh! You missed the news that the third runway proposals had been withdrawn, Iain?

  9. ... at 2.49: No, BAA have simply decided to delay their planning application until after the election. Apart from that they're still buying up property for it etc.

They're also still promoting a high speed train interchange at Iver in Berkshire, to serve this new runway, rather than running the HS trains straight to Terminal 5, which would be quicker for everybody. They're also opposing the Windsor Link Railway which would allow residents to get around the region more easily because all they care about is getting people to Heathrow.

  10. Listening to the World Service, they do like to interrupt you Iain, don't they?

Will the BBC go back to their reports from a few years ago, where they looked at half full reservoirs and dried up rivers? Can they find any in Cumbria? Are they still dried up?

The fact no one could justify the limousines speaks volumes.

  12. Carbon trading has failed to reduce emissions because there is too much potential for cheating but already creating a £100bn market it has helped a lot of bankers in difficult times.

There is a thriving derivatives market.

  13. Business as usual for the catastrophic warming "believers" gathering in Copenhagen who in the interests of saving the planet have ensured "the total number of limos in Copenhagen next week has already broken the 1,200 barrier. The French alone rang up on Thursday and ordered another 42. “We haven’t got enough limos in the country to fulfil the demand,” she says. “We’re having to drive them in hundreds of miles from Germany and Sweden.”

Whatever one thinks of the original lentil eating Luddites of the "environmental movement & I have made it clear I do, they look pretty good compared to the corrupt parasites of big government who have co-opted their programme as a way of keeping us paying taxes to them.
