Norwich North Labour Party Gives Up On Seat

Chloe Smith may be forgiven for having an extra tincture tonight. Antony Little is reporting that Norwich North Labour Party have selected - wait for it - an Ipswich councillor to fight the seat at the next election. In Norfolk there are limits to their inclusiveness, you know.

UPDATE: It seems some of my readers are unaware of the rather bitter rivalry between Ipswich and Norwich. Let's put it this way. It's a bit like Celtic signing a Rangers player. Geddit?

  1. Changed yout tune now Iain. You did not take this stance over SW Norfolk. Whats the difference. Why are you not consistant.

  2. Wrong about Norwich North

He's a Norfolk boy through and through.

Just living the wrong side of the border.

  3. I wasn't aware that Liz Truss was from Ipswich.

There's nothing worse than a turncoat...

  5. Is it as bad as someone from Essex University (Colchester) teaching one day a week at UEA (Norwich) - e.g. me in 1968, without which I'd never have been able to buy my first house (on Ipswich Road, Colchester, as it happens)!?

  6. No, Max. In footballing terms we LOVE Colchester, because you had Ipswich almost as much as we do.

(We'll even forgive the 1-7 drubbing you handed us on the opening day of the season! Thanks for letting us have Paul Lambert by the way - he's a hoot.)

  7. Amused to see an attack on my Norwich credentials from someone who proudly states his Hammers allegiance on his blog!

For the record, I am a life-long City supporter, was born in and lived the first 36 years of my life in what is now the the Norwich North constituency; went to school here, and was a councillor for Thorpe St Andrew for seven years. I am the local candidate.

  8. The Labour PPC for Norwich North is a superb choice to represent the Labour Party at the next General Election. He is passionate about Norwich City, not just the football team, and will be a fabulous MP for the City.

  9. It's like Labour selecting Iain as their candidate. Geddit?

  10. John Cook was born and bred in Norwich. He has been spending half the week with his parents in Thorpe St Andrew. His first reaction on being selected on Saturday was to find a good Norwich pub to celebrate and to watch the Canaries. How more Norwich do you want?

  11. Hmm. Assuming that "john" (above) is indeed the John Cook - it is disappointing that a PPC has his blogger profile disabled...

Maybe that is what the creator of the "Sally Wilcox" blogger profile should've done to his (sorry, her) profile, to avoid the embarrassing connotation of it having only been created this month and having only had 3 views, suggesting that it was created solely for the purpose of reeling off the painfully-obvious party line. Norwich Labour Party really ought to at least get some tips from Malcolm Tucker.

  12. but Iain surely the rivalry applies equally, yet the people of Ipswich clearly didnt have a problem voting for a Norwich City supporting local councilor. So it would seem a bit childish of Norwich North constituents if it became an issue across the border (so to speak).

of more interest really is how does a local councilor from one area combine campaigning for a parliamentary seat the best part of 40miles away.

  13. Iain: You take your life in your hands imho when you invoke Celtic and Rangers . . .

. . . Do not they all vote Labour (perhaps a few SNP) and you take their names in vain?
